Each year the Government records around five
million crimes. The numbers are collected by the
Police Force and by the British Crime Survey.

looked at in two ways- by finding out the actual
crime figures and by looking at how worried
people are about crime.

Some parts of the country are more heavily
populated than others. This can mean big
differences in the crime statistics!
North Yorkshire, in 2004, recorded4 936
burglaries.
South Yorkshire,in 2004, recorded13 455
burglaries
760 000 people live here.
1 270 000 people live here.
11 burglaries per 1000 people
65 burglaries per 1000 people
For us to compare these in a fair way, crimes are
reported for each area based on one thousand
people.
