AIMS

DEFINITION

• A voluntary partnership between an independent
  prescriber, who must be a doctor, and a
  supplementary prescriber who can be a nurse or a
  pharmacist. Together they can implement an agreed
  patient specific clinical management plan with
  the patients agreement.

Supplementary prescribing

• National Prescribing Centre suggests that
  supplementary prescribing is ideally suited for
  the management of long-term conditions
• Supplementary prescribing can improve choice,
  convenience and access to prescribing. It
  provides a safe way to increase prescribing
  capacity within drug treatment services.

Clinical Management Plan (CMP)

• For lawful supplementary prescribing there must
  be a written CMP
• The CMP must relate to a named patient and that
  patients specific condition
• The supplementary prescriber must record the
  independent prescribers and patients agreement to
  the CMP
• DOH has published guidance on creating a CMP
