6 Kinetica Future
Kinetica defines the national bibliographic output. Its prime source of value is the provision of high quality catalogue records.
In the light of the sustained trend towards decentralised, local cataloguing, then uploading, Kinetica's shared cataloguing capability needs to be re-valued. Given fast batch update capability, full cataloguing functionality may no longer be required.
7 Kinetica Future
Special libraries are more interested in using Kinetica as a resource discovery tool. Batch loading procedures are important, but there is little demand for an online cataloguing facility.
Interlending and resource sharing are high priorities. Reduced acquisition budgets have increased interlending.
End user access is becoming increasingly important, as are simplifying the processes of resource discovery and delivery, authentication and payment.
8 Kinetica Future
It was felt the trend towards end user access could be accelerated through the provision of 'Kinetica lite' - a public face (or Google) for the NBD, with an easy entry to the document delivery system. The Workshop considered the NLA's Public Library Portal a promising step in this direction.
The Workshop endorsed and encouraged the role of the NBD in providing access to electronic resources, especially the ability to respond to different needs and demands.
9 Kinetica Future
Kinetica should broaden its coverage and increase the number of participating libraries by collecting records by library sector/group
The KAC endorsed the continuation of NLA initiatives to proactively target small and special libraries with collections and subject areas that are currently poorly represented on the NBD.
