1SELF CARE
- Lance Gardner MBE
- Projects Director
- North East Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust
2WHAT IS SELF CARE?
- The Department of Health define self care as
- Self care is the health and social care taken by
individuals and groups such as families,
communities of interest or neighbourhoods. - Self care may be taken by individual action for
the self or by voluntary action for others where
possible and appropriate. Health and social
services support to self care involves increasing
the capacity, confidence and efficacy of the
individual for self care and building social
capital in the community
3OUR AIM
- People will be supported to take better control
of their care and condition through a wide range
of initiatives. These include a major new focus
on self care and self management. - White Paper Our Health, Our Care, Our Say A New

6CREATING PARALLEL WELLNESS
It is proposed to create a parallel wellness
promotion pyramid with 3 tiers-
Tier 1 Individuals recognise early signs of LTC
and know how and where to seek the most
appropriate assessment process
Tier 2 Citizens can access information, knowledge
and support to prevent LTC, particularly amongst
those at risk due to behavioural or hereditary
risk factors
Tier 3 All of the population will have access to
information, knowledge and support to manage self
limiting conditions, and to be aware of how to
recognise when the situation is deteriorating and
what the next level of care to seek is.

North East Lincolnshire has already demonstrated
a commitment to the key principles within the new
White Paper - the Snowdrop Project, the aim is to
facilitate mutual support from a cohort of people
who care for people with long term addiction of
drugs or alcohol.
12THE SNOWDROP PROJECT
In summary the project-
- Appointed a Carer Development Worker Mike Hardy
- Monthly drop in sessions are held at East Marsh
Sure Start to provide information and advice - Team of 4 volunteers who do 11 work with the
carers - More funding secured away day held on 30 March
2006 - Access to counsellor if carers feel they would
feel better with formal counselling - Access to an alternative therapist who provides
relaxation sessions etc
13There are numerous examples of evaluation into
the efficacy of self care but no one in the UK
has tried to systematise or standardise a
comprehensive approach to a large population
this is North East Lincolnshires opportunity to
do so.
