2
INTASC Principle 3
  • The teacher understands how students differ in
their approaches to learning and creates
instructional opportunities that are adapted to
    diverse learners.

3
INTASC Principle 3
  • KNOWLEDGE
  • Teacher understands/knows
  • - students perform and learn differently,
    depending on learning styles, intelligence
    levels, performance modes
  • - students learning needs (i.e. disabilities)
  • - how to support students whose first language
    is not English

4
INTASC Principle 3 Knowledge
  • - each students learning is influenced by
factors such as talents, prior learning, culture
  • - understands cultural and community diversity
    and incorporates students experiences and
    cultures into instruction

5
INTASC Principle 3
  • DISPOSITIONS
  • Teacher understands/knows
  • - all children can achieve equal success
  • - students have unique talents and perspectives
    appreciates diversity
  • - sensitive to community, cultural norms
  • - makes students appreciate selves, each other

6
INTASC Principle 3
  • PERFORMANCES
  • The teacher
  • - designs varied instruction according to
    students needs
  • - uses teaching approaches that are sensitive to
    learners multiple experiences
  • - makes appropriate responses (time, tasks
    assigned) according to students needs

7
INTASC Principle 3 Performance
  • - knows when to use necessary services for
    students with special needs
  • - seeks to connect students backgrounds
    (family, culture) with curriculum
  • - presents multiple cultural perspectives
    related to students backgrounds
  • - creates learning environment where each
    student is respected

8
Why is INTASC 3 necessary?
  • - Every student deserves an equal opportunity to
learn and classrooms should be equipped and
teachers trained to make this a reality.
  • -This is not only legally required, but morally
    justified.
  • - Culturally educated students become more
    well-rounded individuals.

9
What this classroom looks like
  • WITH INTASC 3 PRINCIPLE
  • Classrooms are decorated to celebrate various
    cultures
  • Classroom is physically adapted for students with
physical disabilities (ie, large desks for
    wheelchairs)
  • Special technology available for students with
    hearing/vision/motor skill problems
  • Teacher engages students to share their cultures
(ie, class projects, show and tell)

10
What this classroom looks like
  • WITHOUT INTASC 3 PRINCIPLE
  • Classrooms would reflect one culture (presumably
white and Christian), if any at all
  • Student comprehension would suffer as result of
    inadequate physical environment
  • Pace of instruction would not address individual
    students needs
  • Students would feel uncomfortable and insecure in
an environment where their needs were ignored

11
Who should evaluate teacher
  • In efforts to introduce multi-cultural learning,
a multi-cultural advisor could be appointed to
ensure students are learning about more than one
    culture.
  • Other individuals who should have a say in the
    evaluation could be
  • - students - parents
  • - administrators - other teachers
