  • NCOM Eastern Region Mission
  • Provide Creative Problem-Solving Opportunities
    for everyone
  • To Foster Original and Divergent Thinking

2
Divergent vs. Convergent Thinking
  • Convergent Problem Solving
  • For every problem, there is just one correct
    answer
  • Divergent Problem Solving
  • For every problem there are MANY correct answers
  • OM encourages participants to be CREATIVE in
    finding a solution.
  • OM encourages participants to interpret and solve
complex problems in a FUN way!

3
How OM Teaches Divergent Thinking
  • Spontaneous Practice
  • We teach children to think on their feet and
how to solve problems at a moments notice.
  • We teach brainstorming techniques
  • We teach team work concepts
  • Solving the Long Term Solution
  • Solving the long term problem requires the teams
to use the skills they learn in spontaneous
practice. They must apply the various
brainstorming techniques and work in a team.

4
How the Competition teaches Divergent Thinking
  • Spontaneous Score
  • The highest score is achieved by giving highly
creative responses to the problem posed to the
    team.
  • Long Term Solution Score
  • The highest score is achieved by meeting all of
the requirements listed out in the problem.
  • Style Score
  • The highest score is obtained by delivering a
Long Term solution that is CREATIVE. Teams pick
items in the set/ costumes/ dialogue to be scored
for Style. There are a few mandatory Style
items, and as always, there are team selected
    items
