16Davies Dos
- 2. Think Canadian
- Review panel from CNF
- Relevance, applicability
17Davies Dos
- 3. Think Research
- Obtain considerable research expertise so that
you can address reviewer guidelines - Investigator
- Consultation
- Methods
- Clinical Topics
- Measures
- Analysis
18Dos
- Develop a clear description of purpose of the
research project - Develop clear research objectives and questions
- Think results that will lead to new knowledge
impact nursing practice - Develop a good review/synthesis of literature to
support research - Have clear definitions of terms/variables
- Use methodology that is appropriate and will
produce credible/generalizable results
19Dos
- Put together a strong team think
multidiciplinary - Build capacity novice researcher on team
- Demonstrate collaboration with decision-makers
- Ensure relevancy to the organization be
realistic with timeframe - Address ethical considerations
- Have a plan to clearly show how results will be
disseminated - Have a well justified budget
20Davies Donts
- Leave it to the last minute
- Proposal development timeline
- Draft again and again
- Keep writing while others provide feedback
- No proposal is ever perfect, acknowledge
limitations
21Davies Donts
2. Leave out patient/client outcomes,
perspectives, experiences
22Davies Donts
- 3. Forget Rigour
- Reliability and validity of tools
- Credibility, confirmability, dependability,
transferability
http//www.elsevier.ca/ReadingResearch
23Donts
- Develop a proposal that is too ambitious for
resources/time allocated - Leave out a reference list to support the
literature review - Undervelop or insufficiently explained the
methodology - Leave out rationale for sample size
- Leave out the data collection tool if one
required - Leave out the consent if one required
24Donts
- Leave the review members to guess who is part of
the team/who will be doing what? - Omit providing letters of support
- Leave out important information about the ethics
review process - Forget to show how results will be disseminated
how this would lead to next steps - Forget to clearly delineate/reflect costs
inkind vs in cash
25Conclusion
- Enjoy
- Creating a proposal From idea to action
- Selecting appropriate research designs A
challenging puzzle - Developing new partnerships New ways of thinking
and working - Innovating by developing new nursing knowledge
that may actually improve the health of
Canadians
