Title: SRG 130 Aseptic Technique

1
SRG 130Aseptic Technique
  • Decontamination
  • Lecture 130-2

3
Text
  • Surgical Technology, Principles and Practices-
    Chapter 8

4
Objectives
  • Define terms related to the terminal
    sterilization/disinfection process
  • Identify the methods of processing items during
    terminal sterilization and/or disinfection
  • Understand the process of instrument
    decontamination
  • Understand Standard Precautions as they apply to
    decontamination

5
Decontamination
  • Cleaning precedes all disinfection processes
  • Cleaning is the physical removal of bioburden
    from instruments, furniture and equipment
  • Purpose is to prevent cross-contamination between
patients and between patients and personnel

6
Processing Area
  • PPE
  • Fully sort instruments
  • Detachable parts are disassembled, keep together
  • Sharps pointing down
  • Heavy on bottom, delicate on top
  • Separate if needed immediately
  • Hinges open

7
Considerations
  • Submersible/non-submersible
  • Heat sensitive/non-heat-sensitive
  • lumens

8
Methods
  • Manual washing/disinfection
  • Process
  • Considerations
  • Ultrasonic cleaner
  • Process

  • Washer/decontamination
  • Process

  • Washer/sterilizer
  • Process
  • Considerations

9
Cycle of Equipment Processing
  • Point of use- the surgical procedure
  • Transport to decontamination area
  • Sort and disassemble
  • Clean- manual or ultrasonic
  • Decontamination- washer/decontaminator or
    washer/sterilizer
  • Inspect
  • Assemble and wrap
  • Sterilize
  • Storage
  • Point of use

10
Manual Washing/Disinfection
  • Detergents
  • Neutral pH
  • Slightly alkaline detergent when using automatic
    machines
  • Low-sudsing detergents must be used in mechanical
equipment to avoid damage to the equipment

11
Manual Cleaning
  • PPE
  • Three-sink arrangement
  • 1st Sink- wash sink with water and detergent or
    disinfectant detergent solution
  • 2nd Sink- intermediate rinse with distilled water
  • 3rd Sink- final rinse with distilled water

12
Ultrasonic Cleaner
  • Washer works by cavitation (sound waves)
  • Cleans only, does not disinfect
  • Removes bioburden from areas hard to reach by
    mechanical or manual cleaning
  • Facility policy dictates the order of use for the
    Ultrasonic

13
Washer-Decontaminator
  • Prerinse cycle
  • Cleaning cycle
  • Final rinse
  • Dry phase
  • At the conclusion of cycle, items are considered
clean and have been exposed to an intermediate
level of disinfection safe for handling

14
Washer-Sterilizer
  • Follow manufacturers instructions
  • Majority of stainless steel instruments and
    heat-tolerant items
  • Gross bioburden must be removed prior to
    placement in WS
  • Free-rinsing, low-sudsing detergent with a
    neutral pH should be used
  • Do not mix metals

15
Washer/Sterilizer Cycles
  • Prerinse
  • Automatic detergent injection
  • Fill phase
  • Wash phase
  • Postrinse
  • Sterilization phase
  • Lubrication
  • Dry phase
  • Items NOT ready for patient use
