1
P2P Dealing with tricky Subjects and Questions
2
What is a tricky or difficult question ?
3
Class Input during P2P session
Class input during the P2P session
  • No connection to your beliefs - never heard the
question or of the issue in question before.
  • Antagonistic people who has no respect for the
Bible and give it no authority
  • People quoting personal experiences as the basis
    for their beliefs.
  • People who are pedantic - want to argue about
lesser important detail that does not really
    prove/disprove the real important issue(s)

4
Listed Prior to talk
  • You don't know answer at all
  • You don't know how to explain even though you
    know the answer
  • Explanation needs to be elaborate as a foundation
    has to be laid.
  • Trick question
  • Answer might be hard for them to accept
  • Explanation to connected with other difficult to
    accept doctrines
  • Question asked with limited detail/info or
reference referred to but not given.
  • Difficult to check whether question is loaded or
    flawed from the start.

5
Not expected to know it all. So if you don't
.....
  • Acknowledge it but then go into Bible to try and
find answer from there together with student "on
    the fly"
  • Verse that states that God will help us to
    remember etc
  • matt 1019,20
  • Best way to learn is to teach
  • Learn/Discover on the fly
  • Spread the word - do not HAVE to convert anyone
  • Happy to share - no worries re those that don't
    want to hear
  • Expect apathy/opposition/antagonism/hostility/peop
le who "know it all" etc

6
Not expected to know it all. So if you don't
..... (2)
  • Try and find a subtopic related to the question
asked that you can use to lay good foundation for
    later
  • E.g. - Demons Rather deal with Angels can't sin
  • Sometimes more beneficial to state that other
foundation work more important in order to
understand the question asked and deal with
    foundation work first.

7
The attitude / kind of person on the other side ?

Class Input during P2P session
Class input during the P2P session
  • apathetic
  • abusive
  • nasty
  • philosophical
  • bitter / disillusioned
  • receptive
  • shy
  • lonely

9
Listed prior to talk
  • Easy
  • Willing to learn
  • Gained their trust
  • Earnestly searching
  • Medium
  • Slightly reserved
  • "Sussing" you out
  • Fair knowledge but a mix of stuff heard
  • Difficult
  • Argumentative
  • Show off
  • Know it all
  • Crusade

10
Ask their name and use it!
  • Reduces "hostile" interaction/environment
  • Makes it more personal

11
Give them the broad frame work - leave detail for
later
  • Let them know there is much more to be
    investigated
  • Wet their appetite by outlining all issues
    involved
  • Lot of "broad framework" info increases curiosity
  • Leave them knowing there is more and wanting more
  • Helps to have them came back for more and
    increase opportunities for interaction and
    building relationships

12
Worth while remembering
  • Sometimes "debating" with a difficult person is
more for the benefit of people standing by and
    listening.
  • Use the difficult person as a "spring board" to
    get others interested/"hooked"
  • There is a precedent for sometimes cutting
"preaching" short when you judge it a case of
    casting your pearls before swine.
