Ubiquitousness measurement framework CAPNET Mobil
e Forums Research Focus Area
  • Minna Isomursu, Prof.
  • HCI lab/TOL/University of Oulu

2
Introduction
  • The ubiquitousness measurement framework can be
used for measuring how ubiquitous the application
    or service scenario is
  • The framework does not measure the quality,
usability or any other quality factor of the
    application, i.e. high ubiquitousness measure
does not imply high quality application

3
Measurement dimensions
  • Invisibility dimension, which has two components
  • ddisturbance. The degree, how much a service
disturbs the user in her actions.
  • mmasking uneven conditioning. Is the user able
to act normally, even if the service/application
is not available or is not fully functional?
  • Environment awareness dimension, which has two
    components
  • cconnectivity. The device where the ubiquitous
service or application is located is connected to
    its environment.
  • cacontext awareness. The service or application
is able to monitor the context of its
    environment, itself, and its users.

4
How to measure d (disturbance)?
  • Proposed measures

5
How to measure m (masking uneven conditioning)
  • Proposed measures

6
How to measure c (connectivity)?
  • Proposed measures

7
How to measure ca (context awareness)?
  • Proposed measures

8
Counting ubiquitousness level
  • From the measures described before, we can count
the level of Invisibility (I) using the formula
  • and the level of Environmental awareness (EA)
    using the formula
  • and as a result we get measure of ubiquitousness
expressed by two numbers representing our two
    measurement dimensions
  • I (d m) / (max(d) max(m))
  • EA (ca) / (max(c) max(a))

Invisibility
  • The attached visual presentation can be used in
placing the measurement result into space of
    ubiquitousness
