Pre Entry
  • Review folder for supporting documentation of
    accommodation request
  • Request more documentation if needed
  • Review documentation, it often has information on
    previous accommodation plans that will assist
    with planning accommodations needed in Job Corps

Types of Accommodations
  • Determine type of accommodation being requested
    by applicant
  • Physical
  • Psychological
  • Medical
  • Educational

Pre Entry
  • Develop packets for each applicant needing
    accommodation
  • Keep a log of all contacts with applicant,
    admissions counselor, agencies, Job Accommodation
    Network (JAN), regional office and center staff
  • Set up face-to-face meeting (phone call if
    applicant is not local) with applicant and your
    accommodation team
  • Fill out reasonable accommodation request form
    during or after assessment
  • Have applicant sign form (if minor,
    parent/guardian also signs) or, if it was a phone
    assessment send to applicant in self-addressed
    stamped envelope for easy return

Develop Standards
  • Use expertise of center team members to develop
    common standards especially with learning
    disabilities cases
  • One-to-one instruction
  • Use of computer-based programs
  • Calculators
  • Decreased number of assignment/test questions
  • Extended testing time, including TABE
  • Use of headphones for attention deficit
    hyperactive disorder to reduce distractions
  • Apply for accommodations early for GED or other
    competency-based testing

After Arrival on Center
  • Ensure that accommodations are in place upon
    arrival. Involve team members to accomplish this
    (career preparation counselors/instructors/manager
    s).
  • Distribute accommodations notification memo and
    reasonable accommodation request form to all
    staff involved with student during career
    preparation period. This may be food services,
    residential living, or any other department
    required to provide accommodations.

  • Copy all accommodation forms and the individual
    program plan (IPP), send to the educational and
    vocational managers and assigned counselor
  • Distribute 45-day tracking form to the managers
    of each department responsible for accommodations

Compliance and Follow Up
  • Use manager of each department to monitor staff
    compliance with plan
  • Review accommodation status of students at
    monthly review meeting
  • Evaluate accommodations for change if it does
    not work, change it
  • Ask for help from agencies, regional office, etc.
  • Place all accommodation records into students
    permanent record before separation
  • Develop an audit system to check for compliance

  • Remember no center directors disability designee
    can do this alone
  • Form a cohesiveness among the team members and
    work as a team each center director needs to
    take a proactive role and assist the team,
    especially in difficult cases
  • Avoid becoming overwhelmed or discouraged if it
    does not work at first
  • Keep trying
  • Seek other avenues and all resources
  • Learn to delegate
  • Ask for help
