Title: Ch 2'2: Polynomial Functions of Higher Degree

1
Ch 2.2 Polynomial Functions of Higher Degree
2
Leading Coefficient Test
Describe the behavior of the following functions.
3
Zeros of Polynomial Functions
  • A function with n degrees has at most n solutions
  • with at most n-1 extrema (relative max and min)
  • Finding the Zeros/Solutions/X-intercepts
  • Factor if possible to find each zero
  • Graph if factoring does not work
  • TI-83 2nd, Trace, Zero bound it above and
below the x-axis follow wherever the graph has a
    zero
  • TI-89 F5, Zero bound it above and below the
x-axis follow wherever the graph has a zero

4
Option 1 Factor it!
Option 2 Graph it!
Now do that for the middle intercept and right
intercept
5
Finding Polynomial with given zeros
  • Write the zeros as factors
  • Remember, they are opposite what you see!
  • Multiply the factors
  • Example Find the polynomial with the zeros of 2,
    4, and -3

1. Write zeros as factors (opposite what you see)
2. Multiply the factors!
