Title: Minimum Impact

1
Minimum Impact
  • Camping

2
What is minimum impact camping?
  • Minimum impact camping is using and enjoying our
    natural environment without harming it.
  • It is also behaving responsibly so that we leave
the land we found it for the next person, and for
    future generations.

3
Why it is so important?
  • Many people now use and enjoy the mountains and
    forests, and other backcountry areas.
  • If we all dont practice minimum impact camping,
the natural environment will be changed and
    harmed by all the people.

4
How do we practice minimum impact camping?
  • There are a number of common sense rules and
techniques that we all can follow to reduce our
    impact.
  • What ideas do you have?

5
Which sticks are best for toasting marshmallows?
  • A) Straight Alder branches.
  • B) Coat Hangers.
  • C) Branches from Pine Trees.
  • D) Driftwood.

6
B) Coat Hangers
  • Trees and bushes need their leaves and branches
to grow bigger. If everyone picked branches
    whenever they roasted marshmallows, there
    wouldnt be any branches left.
  • Bring Camping Forks or Coat Hangers from home to
    enjoy your marshmallows.

7
What should you do with leftover food?
  • A) Bury it.
  • B) Sprinkle it around camp for the animals.
  • C) Burn it.
  • D) Bring it home with you.

8
D) Bring it home with you
  • Leaving food around the campsite encourages bad
behavior in animals, making them dependent on
    humans for food.
  • Bring it home with you and throw it in the
    garbage.

9
What shouldnt you use for table centerpieces or
craft projects?
  • A) Live Plants
  • B) Fallen leaves
  • C) Fallen Pinecones
  • D) Materials that you bring from home

10
A) Live Plants
  • You shouldnt take or harm live plants when you
are camping because of the harm you can do.
  • What would happen if everyone that went camping
wanted to use or take live plants?

11
Where is the best place to pitch your tent?
  • A) In a place where there is already impact and
    no more harm will happen.
  • B) In a pristine site where no one has ever put
    a tent before.
  • C) In the lake.
  • D) Right next to the fire.

12
A) In the place already impacted
  • It is always best to put your tent or your whole
campsite in a place that will be not cause
    further harm to the land.
  • If you pick a fragile area or a place that no one
has used before, you will have a HIGH impact on
    the environment.

13
What shouldnt you do in the lake when you go
camping?
  • A) Swim.
  • B) Wash your hair.
  • C) Go fishing.
  • D) Watch the frogs and fishies.

14
B) Wash your hair
  • When you wash your hair in the lake, you get soap
in the lake. When you get soap in the lake, the
fish might eat it, and thereupon croak. You can
also harm or kill plants with the soap.

15
How big should you build a fire?
  • A) As big as you can
  • B) So small you cant see it
  • C) Only as big as you need it to be
  • D) As big as the nearby cabins

16
C) Only as big as you need it to be.
  • If you keep the fire to a reasonable size, you
wont waste a lot of wood, or build too big of a
    fire pit.

17
What should I bring to wash my hands?
  • A) Sweet smelling 50 soap from Aunties house.
  • B) Biodegradable soap.
  • C) Laundry detergent.
  • D) Just a little bit of my spit.

18
B) Biodegradable soap
  • You should bring biodegradable soap, because
unlike other soaps it dissolves COMPLETELY, in
water. It is better for the environment,
    including fish and animals.

19
Where should you brush your teeth?
  • A) In the lake.
  • B) In your tent.
  • C) Away from sources of water like streams and
    lakes.
  • D) Wait till you get home.

20
C) Away from sources of water like streams and
lakes
  • If you brush your teeth near streams, or rivers
or lakes, you will get toothpaste and other
harmful contaminants in the water, which again
can hurt the plants, fish and animals.

21
How should you cook if the wood supply is low?
  • A) With the microwave.
  • B) With a propane or gas stove.
  • C) With a fire using all the wood you can
    find.
  • D) With a blowtorch.

22
B) With a propane or gas stove.
  • Using a stove will conserve wood and keep your
impact on the forest to a minimum.

23
What should you do with your trash when hiking?
  • A) Just toss it on the ground.
  • B) Hide it in the bushes.
  • C) Drop it as you go so you wont get lost.
  • D) Carry it out to put in a trash can or
    recycle bin.

24
D) Carry it out.
  • If everyone carries out their garbage and
disposes of it properly, the mountains, forests
    and lakes will be litter-free.

25
Where should you get kindling to make a fire?
  • A) Break up a picnic table.
  • B) Cut down small trees.
  • C) Gather all the wood you can find.
  • D) Bring it with you from home.

26
D) Bring it with you from home.
  • If you have to make or gather kindling from wood
that you find around the campsite, you will be
    disturbing the environment.
  • Insects, plants and small animals rely on the
small pieces of wood that you find in the forest.

27
What is the one thing you should do if you see
wildlife?
  • A) Try to feed it your lunch
  • B) Harass it.
  • C) Try to startle or frighten it.
  • D) Respect it.

28
D) Respect it.
  • You should respect any wildlife you see and try
to minimize your impact on them.
