Title: EuroCASE Conference
1Euro-CASE Conference How Can Europe Meet its
2020 Renewables Targets? The Royal Academy of
Engineering, London 3 November 2008
22020 Renewable Energy Targets
- March 2007 European Council agreed to
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 from 1990
levels by 2020 - Meet 20 of total energy needs from renewable
energy sources by 2020 - January 2008 EU Commission Climate Action and
Renewables Package - Proposal for a Directive promoting renewable
energy - Individual, binding targets for each Member State
- Member States to produce National Action Plans
3Ambitious National Targets
42020 Renewable Energy Targets
- Very short timeline to achieve targets- just 12
years. - There needs to be a sustained effort to tackle
regulatory, institutional, legal, technical and
supply chain barriers to new build if we are to
deliver targets within deadline. - Engineers will be important stakeholders in
addressing many of these barriers. - European co-operation will also be essential.
5Euro-CASE Conference
- First concerted attempt to address the
engineering aspects of the challenges associated
with the 2020 targets on a European level. - Conference will bring Europes most eminent
engineers together to - Identify engineering barriers to new renewables
build. - Propose appropriate solutions.
- Share national expertise.
- Examine opportunities for networking and
co-operation. -
6Euro-CASE Conference- Structure
- Opening Addresses
- Lord Browne, President of the RAEng
- Professor Treschow Torell, Euro-CASE President
- Andris Piebalgs, Energy Commissioner (keynote
speech- to be confirmed) - 4 Technology Sessions
- 1 Panel Session
- European Targets, Global Goals The broader
context of the 2020 Renewables Targets. - Networking Reception
7Technology Sessions
- 4 Sessions QA on key renewable energy
technologies - Wind power
- Solar
- Hydro, Tidal and Wave
- Biomass, Biofuels and Biogas
- Each session addresses major technical
challenges associated with specific renewable
technologies - 12 presentations delivered by 10 Engineering
Academies, chosen on basis of national expertise
and geographic balance.
8Panel Session
- European Targets, Global Goals The Broader
Context of the 2020 Renewable Energy Targets - Session will examine what other carbon mitigation
policies are needed to complement the 2020
targets- both in Europe and internationally - Speakers from 6 Engineering Academies to discuss
related carbon mitigation policy issues, such as
renewables trading, international advocacy and
assistance, energy efficiency and nuclear power - Session to be followed by QA.
9Networking Reception
- Reception for all delegates, plus over 100
renewable energy stakeholders from UK and Europe. - Delegation of 20-30 European Science Writers
(tbc). - Addressed by UK Minister for Energy, Malcolm
Wicks (tbc). - Rapporteur to deliver key messages from
conference to attendees.

distributed to all delegates. - Feedback requested at Euro-CASE Board meeting on
4 November.
14Projected Outcomes
- Successful first annual conference
- Production of firm set of policy recommendations.
- Increased networking and co-operation among
European engineers on renewables technology. - European engineers and Euro-CASE recognised as
stakeholders in delivering 2020 targets. - Heightened profile for Euro-CASE and national
Academies in field of renewable energy.
