Forum Objectives
3
Objectives of the Design Forum
  • to identify the emerging spatial needs arising
from changes in the social and academic
    environments
  • to explore the ways to enrich the university
experience by the creation of new generation
    learning spaces
  • to build shared vocabularies and goals for an
interdisciplinary team to work on the development
of a new locus of student learning
  • to maintain an ongoing dialogue among U21
member-institutions in the arena of learning
    environment development

Contextual Scan
5
Contextual Scan
  • Changing manpower needs of the knowledge society
call for university graduates with a broad
    perspective for solving increasingly complex
problems as well as more generic and
    transferrable skills,

6
Contextual Scan
  • Technological advances have brought about a
different way of life of learners and have
    blurred the lines between
  • curricular/co-curricular activities
  • physical/cyber presence
  • learning space/social space
  • formal/informal learning

7
Contextual Scan
  • Pedagogical changes and curricular development
have led to more interdisciplinary interactions,
different needs and multiple roles of students in
the learning process which increasingly relies on
    self-directed activities outside the classrooms

8
Contextual Scan
  • A growing trend of internationalization at
    tertiary education institutions worldwide has
    resulted in an increasingly multi-cultural
    student and staff population.

9
The Challenge
10
The Challenge
  • A multidisciplinary problem by nature
  • Active involvement of and concerted efforts among
academic and functional units are necessary

11
The Challenge
  • To unleash the possibilities calls for revisiting
the whole issue of provision of learning premises
and facilities, as well as challenging the status
    quo and entrenched beliefs

12
The Challenge
  • In a fast-paced society, needs and technological
    development are ever-changing, requiring a
foresight into the future as well as considerable
    adaptability and plasticity of design

13
The Challenge
  • Addressing the needs vs. creating new needs
  • What is now needed?
  • What other needs are to be created?
