How Did Jesus Redeem Us?
5
Philippians 25-8
  • 5Your attitude should be the same as that of
Christ Jesus     6Who, being in very nature
God,        did not consider equality with God
something to be grasped,     7but made himself
nothing,        taking the very nature of a
servant,        being made in human likeness.
8And being found in appearance as a man,
           he humbled himself        and became
obedient to death--           even death on a
    cross!

6
How Did Jesus Redeem Us?
He humbled, that is, emptied Himself of the full
use of His divine power that was His and became
fully a human being.

9
With What Did Jesus Redeem Me?
10
Ephesians 17
  • 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the
forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the
    riches of God's grace

11
Isaiah 535-6
  • 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he
was crushed for our iniquities the punishment
that brought us peace was upon him, and by his
wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have
gone astray, each of us has turned to his own
way and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity
    of us all.

12
1 Peter 118-19
  • 18For you know that it was not with perishable
things such as silver or gold that you were
redeemed from the empty way of life handed down
to you from your forefathers, 19but with the
precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish
    or defect.

13
2 Corinthians 521
  • 21God made him(Jesus) who had no sin to be sin
for us, so that in him(Jesus) we might become the
    righteousness of God.

14
With What Did Jesus Redeem Me?
The price Jesus paid to redeem me was His
suffering and death as an innocent substitute.
15
Application
  • Agree or Disagree
  • When we see a picture of Jesus bloody body
hanging on the cross, we should feel sorry for
    him.

16
Application Response
  • Yes, we should feel sorry for him, but we should
think of much more than just that.
  • Jesus went through that because of our sin. By
shedding his blood, and suffering and dying,
Jesus paid the price of redeeming us.

17
Application
  • A friend of yours who doesnt know much about
    Jesus says to you,
  • I dont see why you make such a big deal about
Jesus sacrificing his life for you. Many people
throughout history have sacrificed their lives to
    save other people.
  • How would you answer your friend?

18
  • Application Response
  • One thing you would want to point out to your
friend is that Jesus did not just
  • save us from injury or death
  • but from an eternity in hell.
  • And you could add that Jesus did not just
  • save us to live a few years longer in this
  • world but to live forever with him in
  • heaven.

19
From What Did Jesus Redeem Me?
20
Romans 616-23
  • 16Don't you know that when you offer yourselves
to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves
to the one whom you obey--whether you are slaves
to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience,
which leads to righteousness? 17But thanks be to
God that, though you used to be slaves to sin,
you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to
which you were entrusted. 18You have been set
free from sin and have become slaves to
    righteousness.

21
Romans 616-23 (Cont)
  • 19I put this in human terms because you are weak
in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer
the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and
to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them
in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness.
20When you were slaves to sin, you were free from
the control of righteousness. 21What benefit did
you reap at that time from the things you are now
  • Ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22But
now that you have been set free from sin and have
become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads
to holiness, and the result is eternal life.
23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of
God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

22
From What Did Jesus Redeem Me?
1. From sins guilt and slavery
23
Romans 623
  • 23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of
God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

24
2 Timothy 110
  • 10but it has now been revealed through the
appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has
destroyed death and has brought life and
immortality to light through the gospel.

25
John 1125-26
  • 25Jesus said to her, I AM the resurrection and
the life. He who believes in me will live, even
though he dies 26and whoever lives and believes
in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

26
From What Did Jesus Redeem Me?
1. From sins guilt and slavery
2. From death, so I can now have eternal life
27
Genesis 315
  • 15 And I will put enmity between you and the
woman, and between your offspring and hers he
will crush your head, and you will strike his
    heel."

28
1 John 38
  • 8He who does what is sinful is of the devil,
because the devil has been sinning from the
beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was
    to destroy the devil's work.

29
Hebrews 214-15
14Since the children have flesh and blood, he too
shared in their humanity so that by his death he
might destroy him who holds the power of
death--that is, the devil-- 15and free those who
all their lives were held in slavery by their
fear of death.
30
From What Did Jesus Redeem Me?
1. From sins guilt and slavery
2. From death, so I can now have eternal life
3. From the devils power, so I am no longer
his slave

32
The Result of Jesus Work of Redeeming Me
33
Romans 323-24
  • 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory
of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace
through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

34
The Result of Jesus Work of Redeeming Me
God has justified me (declared me Not Guilty)
and all people.
This is a gift of Gods grace (undeserved love
and mercy).
35
Application
  • Agree or disagree Right now, in Gods eyes, it
is just as though you and I had never broken any
of Gods laws even once in our entire lives.

36
Further Application
  • Tell several things that are wrong with this
statement Jesus death made it possible for my
sins to be forgiven, but they arent actually
    forgiven until I believe.

37
What I Am Now Free To Do
38
Luke 191-10
  • Zacchaeus the Tax Collector 1Jesus entered
Jericho and was passing through. 2A man was there
by the name of Zacchaeus he was a chief tax
collector and was wealthy. 3He wanted to see who
Jesus was, but being a short man he could not,
because of the crowd. 4So he ran ahead and
climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since
    Jesus was coming that way.

39
Luke 191-10 (Cont)
  • 5When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and
said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I
must stay at your house today." 6So he came down
at once and welcomed him gladly. 7All the people
saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be
the guest of a 'sinner.' " 8But Zacchaeus stood
up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and
now I give half of my possessions to the poor,
and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I
will pay back four times the amount." 9Jesus
said to him, "Today SALVATION has come to this
house, because this man, too, is a son of
Abraham. 10For the Son of Man came to seek and to
    save what was lost."

40
1 Corinthians 619-20
  • 19Do you not know that your body is a temple of
the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have
received from God? You are not your own 20you
were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with
    your body.

41
2 Corinthians 514-15
  • 14For Christ's love compels us, because we are
convinced that one died for all, and therefore
all died. 15And he died for all, that those who
live should no longer live for themselves but for
him who died for them and was raised again.

42
1 Peter 224
  • 24He himself bore our sins in his body on the
tree, so that we might die to sins and live for
righteousness by his wounds you have been
    healed.

43
Application
  • Evaluate this statement
  • Because Jesus took away the guilt of our sins,
we shouldnt be bothered by the fact we fall into
    sin every day.

44
Response
  • Our sins should not bother us in the sense that
we might doubt that they are forgiven.
  • Because of Christs saving work, God forgives
all our sins. There isnt any condemnation (see
Romans 81). But Jesus great love for us
doesnt lead us to be careless or nonchalant
    about our sins.
  • Instead, we hate sin and want to show our thanks
    by
  • avoiding sin. (Romans 61,2)

45
Titus 214
  • 14who gave himself for us to redeem us from all
wickedness and to purify for himself a people
that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

46
