First, we reviewed the 3 types of soil sandy
soil, soil with red clay, and loam.

Then, we used graham cracker crumbs to represent
sandy soil, dry cake mix and cream cheese to
represent soil with red clay, and a combination
of Oreo cookies, cream cheese, cool whip, and
milk to represent loam.

The students enjoyed taste-tasting their soil
samples and relating the textures to how plants
might grow in these types of soils.

Next, we created layers of soil.

• Topsoil
• Subsoil
• Solid rock
• The solid rock was
• represented with
• a chocolate chip cookie.
• The subsoil was represented
• with chocolate chips, graham
• cracker crumbs, and dry cake mix
• combined with strawberry cream cheese.
• The top soil was represented with
• crushed Oreo cookies combined with
• cream cheese, cool whip, and milk.
• We also added a gummi worm to show
