• When the sparkplug ignites the gas vapor in the
  combustion chamber we can measure the force
  exerted on the piston head.
• Force psi x Area
• Psi compression measured inside the cylinder
• Area surface area of the piston head

• Work is accomplished only when force is applied
  through some distance
• Work Force x Distance
• Work is the amount of mass that is moved over a
  distance (Pounds x Feet) divided by seconds
  (ft-lbs/sec)

• Power is the rate at which work is performed

Measuring Horsepower

• 1 Horsepower is the ability to lift 550
  ft-lbs/sec
• For example, an engine lifted a 330 lb weight 100
  feet in 6 seconds.
• 100ft x 330lbs/6 sec 5500 ft-lbs/sec
• (5500 ft-lbs/sec) / (550 ft-lbs/sec) 10 HP
