TTU - HUT Collaboration (1)
Geography has been, is and will be one of the
main drivers in collaboration between Tallinn
Technical University and Helsinki University of
Technology! History There have been many
professor level informal contacts in the
seventies and eighties. The two universities as
institutions were nationally oriented at that
time. During the first years of the last decade
HUT gave some material help to build up the
infrastructure (books, computers,...) of TTU. By
2003 the formal and informal contacts between the
two universities and their staff have developed
to the stage of equal university
collaboration. Today Co-operation agreements
bilateral, trilateral (BUTE included) and the
Baltech university network (the Baltec
universities of technology KTH, LTH and LiTH
from Sweden, DTU from Denmark and HUT).

TTU - HUT Collaboration (2)
Today... Student exchange (visitors and degree
students). E.g. some TTU bachelors continue their
studies at HUT special fields (naval
architecture, electrical and electronic
engineering, aeronautics, telecommunication,...).
Benchmarking and assessment of study programmes
(e.g. mechanical engineering). Course level
collaboration (e.g. mechatronics students robot
competition). Laboratory level research
collaboration (e.g. electromagnetism). Administra
tive staff exchange (from a few days to two
weeks). Library collaboration with Nordic-Baltic
libraries very promising! Baltech collaboration
(e.g. proposal to the 6.FP Total Sustainable
Development around the Baltic See).

TTU - HUT Collaboration (3)
Future perspectives In 2005 the Bologna type
degree structure will be implemented at HUT ? an
easy access for the TTU bachelors to make their
M.Sc. and D.Sc. at HUT special fields (naval
architecture, pulp and paper, mining,
bioinformatics,...). Joint graduate schools,
short courses and summer schools will be very
potential collaboration activities. TTU has new
facilities to promote student and staff exchange,
and short course activities. Joint research
projects will be possible as soon as the Estonian
industry is RD-intensive enough. Some research
financing tools are already available but also
new instruments are needed to encourage
researchers to build up initiatives (e.g.
proposal preparation money). The Baltech vision
The Virtual Baltech Sea Region University of
Technology.
