The first flags were probably used by armies to
mark their forts or soldiers in battle.

Many different people sailed to the Americas,
flying the flag or flags of their native lands.

Colonists replaced flags of their native lands
with new colonial flags. The Grand Union flag was
the flag of the American Revolution. The
Bennington was used by the Green Mountain Boys at
the Battle of Bennington.

No stars have ever been removed from the flag.
Even during the Civil War, when seven states
withdrew from the Union, no stars were taken off.

In 1814, Francis Scott Key was on a rescue
mission aboard a British ship that began to
attack Ft. McHenry from the sea.The next morning,
the flag was still flying. The U.S. had won the
battle.
10How to Display the American Flag
- display from sunrise to sunset
- the flag should never touch anything beneath it,
such as the ground, floor or water - display during school days
- should always be carried in the air free
11- never store the flag in a way that might damage
it - never use as a covering for a ceiling
- never mark or write on the flag
- never use as part of a costume
- a worn-out flag should be destroyed properly
- stand at attention when the flag is raised or
lowered
