11Analyzing Emergent Groups
- These are techniques that can be used to group
data according to their links with other nodes. - The basic NETMAP display format can be modified
slightly to accommodate the results of some of
these advanced analyses. - NETMAP supports the emergent group algorithm.
12 What is the Emergent Group Algorithm??
- A highly interconnected group of entities that
share more linkages with members of their own
group than they do with any others. - The algorithm has special roles defined for
categorizing the nodes as group members, attached
isolates, and detached isolates.
13Example of Display in Emergent Group Analysis
(Fig 7.7.)
14Analyzing Discrete Groups
- A discrete group represents all of the nodes that
can be connected to form a self-contained
independent cluster. - Once all the pathways have been exhausted for a
particular data set, it forms a discrete group.

(Fig 7.8.)
16The NETMAP Presentation Tool (NPT)
- The NETMAP presentation tool (NPT) is a
stand-alone module that supports annotation of
displays and report generation within NETMAP. - NPT emulates a larger number of popular drawing
functions that can be used to adjust contents of
a NETMAP diagram.
17Using NPT for Data Modeling
- NPT can also be used to create new nodes and
links without editing the NETMAP configuration
file. - Nodes can be linked together quickly by
connecting the endpoints of a link to the
designated nodes. - NPT presents data elements as generic drawing
objects.

19Analysts Notebook
- It is one of the most widely distributed
visualization system within the investigative,
intelligence, and law enforcement communities. - The entire system is targeted at non-technical
users. - Many courtroom presentations are based on the
charts produced using the Analysts Notebook.
20Using Link Notebook
- The Link Notebook supports functions used for
link analysis. - Nodes and links can be added manually or
generated from structured data sources. - Individual nodes on the screen are called
entities within the Link Notebook.

23Defining Link Levels in Link Notebook
- Link Notebook allows to the set the number of
levels of linkages to show from or to
relationships. - The result from this feature automatically select
the other entities (e.g., nodes and links)
matching the defined criteria.

27CASE NOTEBOOK
- Useful with temporally coded information.
- e.g., time based.
- Forms of Temporal patterns.
- Proportional time periods.
- real-world time
- (ii) Nonproportional time periods
- relative order of events
28GENERATING CASE CHARTS
- Components.
- Themes
- people, organizations, locations, etc.
- Events
- phone calls, sightings, meetings, contacts, etc.
- (iii) Links
- used as an association
29CASE CHARTS (cont.)
Horizontal Axis shows time Vertical
Axis represents the themes Commonality event is
shared by more than one theme

33IMAGIX 4D
A link analysis tool. Shows the composition of a
piece of software in terms of subcomponents and
their interconnections. Analysis makes the
dependencies and structures within a program
explicit. Produced by a small company located in
California called Imagix. Runs with both Windows
and Unix.
34IMAGIX 4D (cont.)
Derives its data directly from parsing raw
programming code usually stored as ASCII
files. Then converts the content of these files
into its own internal format. Specially tailored
to work exclusively in the analysis of software
programs. Data structures closely approximate a
hierarchical link display paradigms. Non program
data sources can also be imported into Imagix 4D
