Railway brings laughs
  • The damn old carriages, they rock and buck,
    everything's loose, and its a torture riding in
    it,' said Peter Murdoch, proclaiming his
    assessment of the value of the line, arms waving
    to drive home the point. The seats are
    terrible no screws to hold them down. Coming in
    today I had my arse pinched off!

  • The Railway opened in May 1892. The
    Bellerive-Sorell railway,14 ¾ miles of it with
    one or two trains a day each way, nevertheless
    had been useful.
  • The line closed in 1926 and the Sorell station is
    still standing now.

  • The controversy continued. An announcement by the
    minister for land and work intimated that even
    before a sleeper was laid on the line the
    original estimate of 58700 would be exceeded by
    as much a 24000.
