20Need Statement
Caring Hospital in New Jersey will collaborate
with its Health Education department in outreach
sessions to provide training in Spanish language
health information for the hospitals Spanish
speaking patients. The hospital is seeing an
increasing number of Spanish-language only
speakers who need help in managing their chronic
diseases, such as diabetes and asthma.
21Needs Assessment
- The hospital librarian conducted three hour-long
interviews with the health educators at Caring
Hospital to determine the most pressing health
information needs of the patient population. The
health educators identified finding health
information in the native language of the
population as a critical need. The hospital
librarian followed the interviews with a
literature review, confirming the importance of
the provision of health information in languages
other than English and identified the best
resources for the provision of Spanish-language
information, including MedlinePlus.
22Identification of Target Population
Caring Hospital is located in Union County New
Jersey, the 3rd most populous county in New
Jersey with native Spanish language speakers,
according to the 2000 census. Union Hospital is
a primary care center for the county, with an
annual census of 50,000 and 10,000 admissions
(2005 data). Inpatient care emphasizes adult
medicine. Its Spanish language-only speakers are
estimated at 2,000 annually, based on internal
hospital surveys.
