7A. Healthy for body and mind
- Salmons positive effect on health is due to
- its content of omega-3 fatty acids
- Omega-3 has a positive effect on
- - cardiovascular disease
- - depression, schizophrenia and Alzheimers
disease - - foetal and infant brain and eye
development - The body absorbs omega-3 far more efficiently
from salmon than from capsules

8Safe and trendy
- Salmon is safe, healthy and tasty
- Norway is the only country in the world with such
extensive control and research related to farmed
salmon - Fish farmers and feed producers have strict

9B. Feed utilisation
- Of all farm animals, salmon utilises the protein
and energy in the feed the most efficiently - 1.15 kg of feed are required to produce 1 kg of
salmon. For the same growth, poultry requires
1.94 kg and pigs require 3 kg of feed - Fishmeal and fish oil are important raw material
ingredients in fish feed. But these marine
resources are limited in supply - However, raw material ingredients from plants
allow the industry to continue to grow, without
overusing the global fish stocks
10C. Healthy fish
- Salmon is the healthiest farmanimal in Norway
- There has been a 98 per cent
- reduction in the use of antibiotics
- between 1987 and 2004. At the
- same time, salmon and trout production
- has risen tenfold
- The industry has achieved this through effective
vaccination, improved production methods and
preventive work
11D. Aquaculture and the environment
- The aquaculture industry aims to be
environmentally friendly - Sound ethical husbandry and sustainable resource
management are fundamental - principles of the industry
-
- Like all other food production, aquaculture
involves environmental challenges - Consequently, the industry focuses on the
environment at all stages from feed production
until the fish reaches the market
12E. The life cycle of salmon
- Farmed salmon originate from wild brood stock
- Eggs from brood stock hatch after around 60 days
- They are raised in freshwater for around one year
- Prior to living in the sea, salmon undergo an
energy-demanding process called smoltification -
- After a year, the smolt are transferred to sea
cages. The salmon are ready for harvesting after
11.5 years in the sea
13Salmon is delicious!
- Norwegian Salmon is a sought-after food item and
is a popular delicacy in more than 100 countries - Salmon is prepared in a variety of ways. It is
served as sushi in Japan, lucky fish in China and
as festive food in Russia - Salmon is the favourite fish of young Norwegians
- People in Oslo and Mid Norway eat the most salmon
in Norway
14Did you know that...
- .. Norway produces twice as much salmon as it
does beef, poultry, mutton and poultry combined? - .. Norway produced around 540,000 tonnes of
salmon in 2004? - .. Converted into dinner portions, this is 1.3
- billion skinned and boneless 250-g portions?
