Welcome to EOG Parent Night!
  • 4th Grade Math
  • Presented by Ms. Tammy Saxton
  • Thursday, January 29, 2009

2
What are 4th Grade Math Objectives?
3
COMPETENCY GOAL 1 35-40
  • The learner will read, write, model, and compute
    with non-negative rational numbers (Numeration)
  • 1.01 0.01 through 99,999
  • 1.02 multiplication and division
  • 1.03 Solve problems using models, diagrams, and
    reasoning
  • Fractions
  • Relationships among fractions involving
  • Halves
  • Fourths
  • Eighths
  • Thirds
  • Sixths
  • Twelfths
  • Fifths
  • Tenths
  • Hundredths
  • Mixed numbers

4
Problem Example Goal 1
5
Goal 1 (Continued)
  • 1.04 Develop fluency with addition and
subtraction of non-negative rational numbers with
    like denominators, including decimal fractions
    through hundredths
  • 1.05 Develop flexibility in solving problems by
    selecting strategies and using mental
    computation, estimation, calculators or
    computers, and paper and pencil.
  • 35-40 of EOG will come from Goal 1!!!!

6
Problem Example 2 Goal 1
7
COMPETENCY GOAL 2 10-12
  • The learner will understand and use perimeter and
    area. (Measurement)
  • 2.01 Develop strategies to determine the area of
rectangles and the perimeter of plane figures.
  • 2.02 Solve problems involving perimeter of plane
    figures and areas of rectangles.

8
Problem Example Goal 2
9
Competency Goal 3 10-12
  • The learner will recognize and use geometric
    properties and relationships. (Geometry)
  • 3.01 Use the coordinate system to describe the
location and relative position of points and draw
    figures in the first quadrant.
  • 3.02 Describe the relative position of lines
    using concepts of parallelism and
    perpendicularity.
  • 3.03 Identify, predict, and describe the results
    of transformations of plane figures.
  • Reflections.
  • Translations.
  • Rotations.

10
Problem Example Goal 3
11
Competency Goal 4 15-18
  • The learner will understand and use graphs,
    probability, and data analysis. (Data)
  • 4.01 Collect, organize, analyze, and display data
(including line graphs and bar graphs to solve
    problems.
  • 4.02 Describe the distribution of data using
    median, range and mode.
  • 4.03 Solve problems by comparing two sets of
    related data.
  • 4.04 Design experiments and list all possible
outcomes and probabilities for an event.

12
Problem Example Goal 4
13
Competency Goal 5 20-25
  • The learner will demonstrate an understanding of
    mathematical relationships. (Algebra)
  • 5.01 Identify, describe, and generalize
    relationships in which
  • Quantities change proportionally.
  • Change in one quantity relates to change in a
    second quantity.
  • 5.02 Translate among symbolic, numeric, verbal,
    and pictorial representations of number
    relationships.
  • 5.03 Verify mathematical relationships using
  • Models, words, and numbers.
  • Order of operations and the identity,
    commutative, associative, and distributive
    properties.

14
Problem Example Goal 5
15
EOG Math Questions
  • Total number 82
  • 54 Calculator Active
  • 28 Calculator Inactive
  • Test is not a test for speed, but for higher
order thinking skills NOT a timed test

16
What Parents Can Do
  • Check homework nightly
  • Go over the work by checking that the answers are
correct and problems are worked out correctly by
    the directions
  • Practice multiplication and division facts
  • Help your child study key reference pages in
    textbook
  • Table of Measures page 656
  • Rays and Angles page 408
  • Quadrilaterals other Polygons pages 412-413
  • Transformations page 434

17
What Else Can Parents Do?
  • Allow time for real opportunities to learn
  • Grocery store
  • Weighing produce
  • Counting money
  • Comparing best buys
  • Multiplying costs of more than one item
  • Many more ways..
  • Recipes
  • Measuring

18
More.
  • Log on to Department of Public Instruction (DPI)
for sample problems work these with your child
    before the test
  • http//www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/pare
    nts/
  • Allow your child computer time at home to go to
    websites to practice math
  • www.studyisland.com

19
And More.
  • Discuss the importance of EOG tests, especially
    in fourth grade.
  • There is no retest.
  • There is no summer school.
  • The scale scores are different from 3rd grade,
and they continue to increase each year.
  • One chance to do OUR BEST!!!

20
One Final Word
  • EOG tests have a great deal of weight however,
they are NOT to replace the everyday progress of
    a child.
  • Students should not have any undue stress during
    testing time.
  • Students should eat, sleep, play, and relax as
much as possible during EOG testing week.

21
Together We Can
  • Reach our goals!!!!
