  • Population approx. 258,000 (320,000 greater Hull)
  • Very flat
  • Around 37 Council tenants
  • Hull 51 households with no car - National 32
  • 10 walk to work, 14 cycle to work
  • Traffic growth less than 1
  • Known as "Hump City" (over 1400 road humps)

  • all measures supported by all Emergency Services
  • annual meeting approval of minutes
  • occasional site trials

  • regular meetings 3-4 times each year
  • schemes to include minimum number of measures
  • vertical measures to be a maximum 75mm high
  • cushions to be 2.1m wide with 550mm side slopes
  • cushions must be protected by waiting
    restrictions
  • speed table ramps on local distributors to be
    1800mm long

  • looking at crime disorder issues with Police

  • disciplinary action will be taken against any bus
    driver caught exceeding 20mph in zones

Revisiting existing schemes
  • For next few years we plan to spend 70k/year to
  • revisit at least 3 zones/year
  • carry out after perception attitude surveys
    (Best Value)
  • address Emergency Services' concerns
  • update measures to latest designs
  • amend measures to satisfy residents where
    possible.

  • 1st Home Zone (phase 1) complete mid-June 2000 as
    part of an area 20mph Zone (Local Safety Scheme).
    Phase 2 starting soon
  • Recently received requests for Home Zones (one
    from an existing 20mph Zone)
  • Considering home zones as part of future traffic
    calming/20mph zones

  • Where scheme can be justified on accident terms
  • Outside schools as part of SRTS
  • Must ensure that there is no significant affect
    on Ambulance response times. We may need to
    adjust nearby schemes as part of proposals
  • As part of strategic speed review
