The basics of gustar

• Even though we translate the verb gustar as to
  like, it literally means to please. So, when
  you say, Me gustan las flores, youre actually
  saying, Flowers please me. Las flores is the
  subject of the sentence, and me is the indirect
  object.

• From the pattern, you can see that the subject
  of the sentence usually follows the verb.
  However, you need to know if the subject is
  singular or plural to know which form
  (conjugation) to use. If the subject is singular,
  use gusta. If the subject is plural, use gustan.
  If the subject is a verb infinitive, use gusta.

• Me gusta el gato pero no me gustan los perros.
• Me gusta ver películas.
• Me gustan las cortinas.

• I know what youre thinking. What if someone
  else likes something? How do I say so-and-so
  likes such-and-such?
• Well, we already know that gustar is conjugated
  for the subject which is doing the action
  (pleasing). Sothe indirect object must indicate
  who the action is being done to (who is being
  pleased).

• An indirect object tells to whom or for whom and
  action is performed.
• Examples
• Les gusta el español.
• Te gustan las pasteles.
• Nos encanta nadar.
• The indirect object comes right before the
  conjugated verb!

• As long as you follow the pattern (I.O. conjd.
  gustar subject) you can say that anybody likes
  anything!
• Examples
• Os gusta la fiesta.
• Nos gustan la película.
• Les gusta la piñata.

• Did you know that this same pattern can work for
  verbs other than gustar?
