Title: Sample Storage

Sample Storage
  • If coagulation testing (other than PT) can not be
performed within the 4 hour window from specimen
acquisition to analysis, it is critical that
platelet poor plasma (PPP) be properly stored.
Aliquots of PPP should be frozen immediately
after processing and not held at 4 oC. If
samples are stored at 20 oC, it is important
that a non-frost-free freezer (manual) be used
since automatic defrost cycles may cause sample
deterioration during the heating phase. For
example, FVIII activity can DECREASE by 20 after
4 hours at 4 oC, by 34 when stored at -20 oC
(cycling freezer), and by 11 at 70 oC. The
activity of FV, the other labile factor can
decrease by 20 at -20 oC. We recommend that all
referred samples be stored at -70 oC.
