Guided Plan for Success

• College must choose a topic for a plan to enhance
  student learning
• Part of 10 year re-accreditation process
• 5-year plan to implement improvements
• Topic chosen Redesign and improve the Colleges
  Advisement Process

Why did we develop a plan to improve the
advisement process?

• Because we care about student success!
• Because you told us to
• We asked our stakeholders, including students,
  faculty, staff, graduates, and others
• Advisement was frequently mentioned by many
  stakeholders as an area where improvement is
  needed

How did wedecide on the topic?

• We did surveys (in person and electronic)
• Focus groups
• Meetings with different groups
• Narrowed topics to two choices and then held
  College-wide voting

Who will be involved inthe improvement process?

• Three groups will be involved in actions to
  improve advisement
• HGTC staff and administration
• HGTC Faculty
• HGTC Students

College-Wide Actions

• Better assist students in choosing career goals
• Provide broader, more in-depth New Student
  Orientations
• Offer seminars to improve student success skills,
  such as effective studying, time management, test
  taking, etc.
• Establish WaveNet Central, where students assist
  students registering for classes
• Track student success measures, including lower
  withdrawal rates, reduced number of major
  changes, and improved graduation rates

Faculty Actions

• Meet/communicate regularly with student advisees
• Improve quality and usefulness of program guide
  sheets
• Refer students to appropriate Student Support
  Services for assistance, when needed

• Perform self-assessment of student success skills
• Attend New Student Orientation
• Learn to perform your own degree audit and track
  progress toward goals
