Paraphrase, summary and direct quotes

  • 2) What makes a good paraphrase/ summary (ie what
criteria should we use to judge it)?

Paraphrase and Summary
Filipinos are learning English not just to
speak with their own country folk but to link
themselves with the wider English-using community
throughout the world. It is neither liberal nor
liberating to permit learners to settle for lower
standards than the best, and it is a travesty of
liberalism to tolerate low standards which will
lock the least fortunate into the least rewarding
careers.

Paraphrase and Summary The Dramatistic Approach

Entering the conversation
14
Using Direct Quotes
  • When is it better to use a quote than paraphrase/
    summary?

15
Using Direct Quotes
  • When is it better to use a quote than paraphrase/
    summary?
  • List all the reasons you can think of.
  • Compare to the suggested list.

16
How To Quote
  • Look at the three sets of phrases in point 4 on
the handout about how to quote.
  • How do the three sets differ in usage? ie why
    would the writer choose these?
  • Add more examples to each set if possible

17
Guiding Principles
  • Use sources as concisely as possible do not
    drown out your voice.
  • Make it clear when it is your voice and when it
is the voice of the author(s) you are referring
    to.
  • Always make sure your source contributes to your
argument. (Roz I changed the wording a little
here from Always show how now clearer?)

18
Plagiarism
  • 1) Read the handout
  • In groups decide
  • Where do you draw the line in the list of points
    (1-6)?
  • What is acceptable?
  • 2) Discuss why plagiarism happens?
  • Make a list of reasons.

19
Plagiarism
  • 3) Look at the list of suggested reasons on the
second handout. How far do you agree with the
    suggested points?

20
How to persuade use of language
  • Look at question iv) of the Quirk text questions
  • Compare the examples you found in the text with a
    neighbour

21
Quirks use of other texts
  • Look at question i) iii) of the Quirk text
    questions
  • Compare your answers with those of your
    neighbours
  • Note any points you are not clear about
  • Re-read the text briefly for next week so you are
    familiar with Quirks main arguments.
