The Major Career Fields
Landscaping (the green industry) improves our
natural environment to meet the needs and desires
of people Landscape architecture integrates
the disciplines of art and science with
landscaping Landscape contracting deals
primarily with the installation of landscapes
the main link between the design and the
implementation of a landscape must have a
knowledge of plant materials, proper planting
techniques, engineering, and building skills
Landscape maintenance contracting also known as
gardeners or professional horticulturists
3
Elements of Landscape Design
Simplicity accomplished by repeating specific
plants throughout the design and by massing plant
types or colors into groups rather than spacing
them- enables each plant or color to be seen
separately. Balance applied by imagining the
area of landscape placed on a seesaw. If
properly balanced, the left side of the landscape
should have no more visual weight than the right
side. May be either symmetrical (when one side of
the landscape is an exact duplicate of the
other), or asymmetrical (one side of the
landscape has the same visual weight as the other
side but is not a duplicate).
4
Elements of Landscape Design (Cont.)
Focalization of Interest recognizes that the
viewers eye wants to see only one feature as
most important within any given view. Rhythm
and Line responsible for the sense of
continuity among different areas of the
landscape. Scale and Proportion helps to keep
all elements of the landscape in the correct size
relationship with the building- keeps the
elements from towering over the building when
fully grown. Unity creates the flow among
scale and proportion, balance, accent, rhythm,
and simplicity.
5
Technical Procedures for Landscape Maintenance
Replacement of plant materials Application of
mulch to proper depth around plants Soil
analysis (for proper pH levels and fertility
needs) Pruning Weed control Planting and
caring for flower beds Proper mowing
procedures Maintenance of landscape accessories
(i.e., pools, fountains, lighting, etc.)
6
How Much Mulch?
To calculate the volume of mulch needed to
cover a landscape bed, take the length in feet
times the width in feet times the depth in feet.
Answer will be in cubic feet. Example How
much mulch would you need to fully cover an area
8 feet wide by 100 feet long by 3 inches deep?
8 ft. 100 ft. .25 ft. 200 cubic feet 200
cubic feet/ 27 (3ft3ft3ft) 7.4 cubic yards

Xeriscaping
Xeriscaping is a practice in which water
conservation is used in creative landscapes.
Xeriscaping ensures water efficiency in all
future landscape practices, especially for areas
where water is scarce and expensive.
