What is a Mentor?
  • Traditionally, its the activities that one
    person does to help another
  • Can help the other do a job more effectively
  • Can help the person progress in their career
  • Someone who has Been there, done that and has
    earned the appropriate trust and respect

  • Mentors
  • Coach
  • Train
  • Discuss
  • Counsel
  • Partner
  • Advise
  • Facilitate
  • Network

Who are mentors?
  • Usually older, more experienced
  • They want to guide and help others
  • They give back as pay back for others who helped
    them along they way
  • They have positive experiences (formal and
    informal)
  • Have a great reputationrole model
  • They believe it is their responsibility to grow
    leaders

Who are protégées?
  • Want to expand their horizons
  • Open and receptive to learning and trying new
    ideas
  • Willing to accept feedback and act on it
  • Focused on results
  • Able to communicate and can ask for help
  • Responsible and committed

Tell Your Stories
  • Failure and success stories are powerful tools
  • Tell how to do it so it comes out right
  • Explain why it came out wrong and how you did it
    better the next time
  • Why did evening workshops fail but lunch and
    learn work?
  • Why should audio seminars be a part of your
    annual program plan?
  • Heres what we did when we had a speaker
    no-show.
  • Mentors and protégées that talk and tell personal
    scenarios establish a rapport that makes for a
    meaningful learning experience

  • Mentor our Members!
  • Can you provide advice on how to establish
    committees?
  • Tell why you cant be a committee of one and
    succeed
  • Can you identify candidates for the leadership
    team?
  • Do you know of companies that have facilities
    that chapters can use?

Chapter MOMs
  • You already have them!
  • We call them Fellows
  • Seasoned professionals
  • Certainly have a vested interest in NCMA

How Do I Find a Mentor?
  • Usually they are right in front of you
  • Who do you admire and respect?
  • Who do you think has insight?
  • Who has experience?
  • At the chapter level, this is usually former
    chapter officers and Fellows
  • Ask!
  • What do you have to lose?
  • Let them know that you think you can learn about
    leadership and NCMA from them
  • Flattery works!
  • Let them know that you respect their time
    obligations and your expectations of the
    arrangement
  • Could we talk for 10 minutes a week?
  • Do you mind exchanging e mails?
  • Could we meet for lunch every other month?
  • Ball is in your court you can always fire your
    mentor and find another

Mentoring is Important!
  • Our members are the faces of the workforce today
  • They are the NCMA customers of tomorrow
  • Your protégée today is tomorrows chapter leader
  • You really need to put yourself out of your
    current chapter job!
  • Most important job of a leader is to grow future
    leaders
