  • Statistic The average consumer drank 54.2
gallons of soda in 2002 (578 cans)
  • Soft drinks do not have any nutritional value (in
terms of vitamins and minerals). They have higher
sugar content, higher acidity, and more additives
    such as preservatives and colorings.

Caffeine A central nervous system stimulant
  • Increases alertness
  • Reduces fine motor coordination
  • Causes insomnia, headaches, nervousness, and
    dizziness
  • Can be lethal if 10g or more is taken in
  • Takes about 6 hours for ½ caffeine to be
    eliminated from system

4
Caffeine (cont)
  • Children who consume too much caffeine are more
    fidgety, nervous, and irritable
  • Adults often observe headaches and nausea
  • A 12 oz. can has from 30-70 mg of caffeine and
the normal amount adult is anywhere from 50 to
    200 mg daily

5
Sugars

  • Cola has about 10 teaspoons of sugar per can and
orange soda has about 13 tsp. out of the 29
teaspoons the average kid should have per day
  • A simple sugar fact in 1821 the average person

Diet Soda
  • 1969 Sweeteners such as saccharin and cyclamate
found to be carcinogenic and banned in U.S
  • 1983 announcement of new chemical sweetener-
    aspartame/ Nutrasweet
  • 200 times sweeter than sugar

8
Diet Soda (cont)
  • Possible side effects of aspartame-sweetened
    products
  • 92 documented symptoms of aspartame, from coma to
    death
  • Aspartame consumption may cause
  • Fibromyalgia, spasm, shooting pains, numbness of
    legs, cramps, veritgo, seizures, dizziness,
    headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, depression,
anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision
    and memory loss

9
Diet Soda (cont)
  • When temperature of sweetener exceeds 86 F, the
wood alcohol in aspartame converts to
    formaldehyde
  • Formaldehyde stores in the fat cells,
particularly in the hips and thighs.

10
Carbonation
  • Carbonation is carbon dioxide that has been
    dissolved in water
  • CO2 H2O ? H2CO3
  • (carbon dioxide water ? carbonic acid)
  • The carbonic acid (present in small amounts)
increases the acidity of the pop

11
Carbonation (cont)
  • Carbonation in soda, diet or regular, along with
sugars and acids in the drink, is very bad for
the teeth. It can cause breakdown of the tooth
    structure.
  • Carbonation in soda pop and other beverages can
dehydrate your body to the point of ill
    performance

12
Acids
  • Common acids in Soda lactic acid, malic acid,
    citric acid, phosphoric acid
  • Phosphoric acid is shown for depleting bones of
    calcium
  • Acids in soda pop are notorious for etching tooth
enamel in ways that can lead to cavities
  • Acids have a high pH level Almost no soda is
    higher than 3.0
