Title: Variables in Science

1
Variables in Science
  • Manipulative Variable
  • Responding Variable
  • Control Variable
  • Then what is a Hypothesis's?

Swinging Washer Lab
2
Manipulative Variable
  • Manipulated Variable what you are going to
    change in the experiment..
  • Example
  • Number of washers used

3
Responding Variable
  • Responding variable what you are going to
measure in the experiment. What part changes
when you change the manipulative variable
  • Example Number of swings

4
Control Variable
  • Controlled variables factors that do not change
during your experiment. ALWAYS KEPT THE SAME
  • Example String length

5
Hypothesis
  • Hypothesis a testable statement that forecasts
how a manipulated variable will affect a
    responding variable.
  • ifthen..because statement.
  • Example
  • If I add more washers to the string then they
will swing more because of momentum

6
  • Mr. Smithers Special Juice

7
Mr. Smithers
  • Mr. Smithers thinks that a special juice will
increase the productivity of workers. He creates
two groups of 50 workers each and assigns each
group the same task (in this case, theyre
supposed to staple a set of papers.) Group A
is given the special juice to drink before they
start to work. Group B is not given the
special juice. After an hour Mr. Smithers counts
how many stacks of papers each group has made.
  • Group A made 1,587 stacks
  • Group B made 2,113 stacks.
  • 1-What is the controlled variable?
  • 2- What is the manipulated variable?
  • 3- What is the responding variable?
  • 4- What should Mr. Smithers conclusion be?
  • 5-Draw a chart, graph or table to show the results

8
Mr. Smithers Controlled Variable
  • He creates two groups of 50
  • same task

9
Mr. Smithers Manipulative Variable
  • Group A is given the special juice to drink
    before they start to work

10
Mr. Smithers Responding Variable
  • Group A made 1,587 stacks
  • Group B made 2,113 stacks.
