Possible Signs of Abuse

• Burns, wounds, rope marks
• Fractures, sprains, black eyes
• Unexplained STDs
• Unexplained rectal or vaginal bleeds
• New onset shyness or withdrawal
• Nervousness

Who Gets Abused?

• Dependent
• Frail
• Chronically Ill
• Physically disabled
• Communication problems
• Behavior problems

Who Abuses Them?

• Caregivers (CNAs)
• Lowest paid employees
• Overworked, understaffed
• Male
• Work on 2nd shift

• Job burnout
• Cant deal with behavior problems
• Difficulty managing stress
• Personal problems (home, kids)
• Different ethnic backgrounds
• Understaffing
• Lack of supervision

Dealing with Behaviors

• All behavior has a purpose
• Get into the residents head
• Find out why
• Find out the residents life story and feed it
  back to them (if demented)
• If you are tempted to hit someone, remove
  yourself from the situation

Reporting

• Under federal law, if you even suspect abuse or
  neglect it MUST be reported to the administrator
• You should also notify your supervisior
