Title: WP2
1WP2 The Front End Test Stand Overview
Alan Letchford
2FETS main components High brightness H- ion
source. Magnetic Low Energy Beam Transport
(LEBT). High current, high duty factor Radio
Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ). Very high speed beam
chopper. Comprehensive diagnostics.

3Work is progressing well on all aspects of
FETS. Essentially where we hoped to be by now in
most regards. Collaboration is working well.
Good interactions and knowledge transfer. Except
for ion source and chopper, largely been paper
work so far but about to start producing
hardware.
4Ion Source Progress very encouraging. Probably
best H- source in the world. Other
establishments queuing up to get their hands on
it. High voltage pulser problems havent
impacted much so far but will do if not rectified
soon. Talk by Dan Faircloth.
5LEBT Magnetic LEBT beam optics feasibility
confirmed. Solenoid design study
underway. Recheck optics using actual solenoid
design before going for manufacture. LEBT space
charge studies underway to understand
neutralisation.
6RFQ 324 MHz RFQ based on Toshiba 3MW pulsed
klystron. Beam dynamics look good. Electromagnet
ic MAFIA modelling of 4-rod and 4-vane versions
plus 3D CAD designs. Cold models in manufacture
this year. Thales still muddying water with 352
MHz klystron proposal but timescales look
wrong. Talk by Ajit Kurup.
7Chopper Fast and slow pulsers demonstrated. All
main specification goals met so far. Two beam
optics versions available both give low
emittance growth and low chopped beam survival
fraction. Buncher cavity and quadrupole designs
underway. Report produced for HIPPI. Talk by
Mike Clarke-Gayther.
8Diagnostics Work has concentrated on exotic
diagnostics. Residual gas ion spectroscopy. Non-
destructive laser stripping diagnostics. Long
pulse (10ns) laser sourced and priced. Prefered
short pulse (100ps) laser system being
sourced. Hardware to be purchased this year.
9Beam line infrastructure Beam line component
arrangement being investigated. Alignment/mountin
g strategies under review. Building R8
infrastructure changes going slowly. Meeting next
week with building services group to move
forward. Hope to have work largely underway this
year resources allowing.
