Title: Lecture 01 Tutorial Activity using the PASS strategy

1
Lecture 01 Tutorial Activity using the PASS
strategy
  • MGT1000 Organisational Behaviour and Management
  • Bernadette Lynch

2
Session objectives
  • By the end of this session you should
  • have covered one of this weeks learning
    objectives and
  • have some ideas on how to approach the reading
and study in this course by using the
    PASStrategy

3
The PASS strategy
  • The PAS Strategy is taken from the LTSU site.
  • PASS involves approaching your study in ½ hour
blocks. The letters PASS stand for
  • Plan,
  • then Act,
  • then Survey your work,
  • then take a Short break

4
  • The four steps of the PASS strategy are as
    follows
  • PLAN - Spend 2 minutes planning what you will do
    in this ½ hour
  • ACT Spend 25 minutes doing what you planned
  • SURVEY Spend 3 minutes surveying or reviewing
    what you have covered
  • SHORT BREAK - Then take a short break

5
We will now use the pass strategy to cover one of
this weeks learning objectives.
6
PASS - Plan
  • The first 2 minutes of your half-hour you spend
deciding on and jotting down your plan - exactly
what you are going to do or learn in the
    remainder of the half-hour.
  • I have decided we will start with module 1

7
You ask the following questions in the planning
step
  • Am I focussing on something that relates to the
    course assessment?
  • Yes this learning objective is tested on the exam

8
You ask the following questions in the planning
step
  • What action will I take?
  • Obviously you will need to read the designated
section of the text. But what else will you do?
Take notes? Draw a mind map? Use a highlighter on
the text? Make margin notes? You need to decide
this yourself. You might want to talk to the
person next to you about this.

9
You ask the following questions in the planning
step
  • What specific part of the course will I aim to
    cover?
  • Specifically complete the text reading for the
learning objective Describe what managers do
(read pages 4 - 9 of the text)

10
You ask the following questions in the planning
step
  • Is this achievable?
  • Yes, maybe. Some of you will complete this
reading easily in 20 minutes and some of you will
not. You will find it will take you longer if
this is the first time you have read this
    material.

11
PASS - Act
  • This is when you DO IT!
  • You now carry out your planned actions on the
specific sections of your study material for the
next 20 minutes (Usually you would spend 25
minutes, but we have shortened this as this
activity is occurring in a lecture).

12
PASS - Act
  • Remember to be actively engaged by highlighting,
underlining, making notes, tables, or diagrams,
seeing how these ideas fit with the module
objectives and other ideas in the subject.

13
  • Stop reading your time minutes is up

14
PASS - Survey
  • Spend the final 3 minutes surveying or reviewing
what you have just done, making some record of
    what you have learned.
  • This step is a crucial one in reinforcing what
you have just covered and making it easier to
    remember.
  • Your survey also needs to be an active one.

15
PASS Short break
  • Now it's time to stop and take a 2-minute break.
Relax, stretch, get a drink, give yourself a
small reward. Then begin another effective and
    efficient half-hour!

16
PASS Short break
  • After two (2) PASS half-hours, take a longer
break of 5 minutes, after three (3) PASS
half-hours take a good break of 20 minutes and
perhaps a change of subject. After five (5) PASS
half-hours it is probably time to finish study
until later in the day, or carry over to the next
    day.

17
But there is no break for you now. Prepare for a
short quiz.
18
Food for Thought after the quiz
  • Did the idea of working in ½ hour blocks work for
    you or not?
  • Can you usually concentrate for ½ an hour would
    shorter or longer be better?

19
Food for Thought after the quiz
  • Do you think using this strategy influenced how
    you went on the quiz?
  • Do you usually set goals for yourself when you
    study?
  • Can you see any benefit in doing this?

20
Food for Thought
  • Dont get too worried if you did not do too well.
You still have plenty of time to really study
this material. The question is Were you as
efficient and active in your reading as you could
    have been?

21
Food for Thought
  • How did you do on the quiz?
  • How did you find the survey time? Have you ever
    used this before?
  • Can you think of a way to improve this strategy?

22
Check what you have learned
  • Do you have any unanswered questions about the
    course?
  • Do you have a reading and study strategy for this
    week?
