3Biliary fever what is this disease ?
- Disease of dogs and cats caused by a parasite
that affects the red blood cells - The parasite damages the red blood cell causing
anaemia (blood loss) - Similar to malaria in people

- Parasite is Babesia canis or Babesia felis
- Parasite transmitted by ticks
- Disease is more prevalent in the summer months

- Listless

- Blood smear examination
- which is looking at a small drop of blood under
the microscope

- Specific drug to kill the parasite
- Sometimes blood transfusions
- Supportive therapy
- A delay in treatment will result in an increased
expense and possibly death

- If possible avoid/limit contact areas that may
have ticks - The routinely given 31 or 51 vaccine does not
prevent this disease - A specific vaccine is available (Piro) that can
protect a dog against biliary fever
