5Healthcare Emergency Incident Command
System(HEICS)
- HEICS is a command and control system for
managing disasters that is based on the Incident
Command System used in fire, police, and
emergency medical service departments, but
adapted for use in a healthcare setting.
6Hazard Vulnerability Analysis (HVA)
- An HVA identifies the events most likely to
affect your organization and the probable impact
if they do occur - Based on identified hazards, the facility should
assess how prepared they are to handle them - Depending on the evaluated level of preparedness,
the facility must take necessary steps to ensure
they are prepared to meet the challenges
presented by the hazards
7SOP Examples
- External Chemical Exposures i.e. tanker truck
crash - Natural Hazards i.e. tornado
- Public health disaster i.e. pandemic flu
8- To ensure continuation of operations (COOP)
during any disruptive event or situation - Facilitates the performance of department/agency/f
acility essential functions during an emergency
or situation that may disrupt normal operations

- Identify weaknesses in plan
- Refine roles and responsibilities
- Assess adequacy of resources
- Improve coordination / communication both
internally and externally

healthcare facilities had this plan in place. - However,
