Title: Mathematics COE Task Writing Workshop

1
Mathematics COETask Writing Workshop
  • Anton Jackson
  • Mathematics Assessment Specialist

2
What is the COE?
  • A legislatively approved alternative to the WASL
that is comparable in rigor to the WASL WASL is
still the standard for assessing a students
    skills and knowledge
  • One way a student can meet requirements for a
    Certificate of Academic Achievement (CAA)
  • Designed for students who have the skills and
    knowledge assessed on the WASL

3
What is in a COE?
  • Student work samples developed over time in
academic and/or career and technical classes
  • Each work sample demonstrates both mathematical
    content and process
  • The work is aligned to the grade 10 Essential
    Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs), Grade
    Level Expectations (GLEs) and Washington
    Assessment of Student Learning (WASL)

4
Why do a COE?
  • Legislated Districts must make community aware
    of the option
  • Opportunity Another option for students to
  • Demonstrate skills
  • Meet graduation/CAA requirements
  • Alignment to Standards EALRs and GLEs

5
Time Line for High School Assessments Aligned to
New Standards
  • August 2008 New High School Mathematics
    Standards approved
  • November 2008 August 2009
  • Align existing assessment items to new
    grade-level standards
  • Write new items to fill in gaps
  • 2009 and 2010 Pilot new and rewritten items
  • 2011 First administration of HS End of Course
    Assessments
  • First administration of new WASL based on new
    standards (??)
  • July 2011 State Board adopts new performance
standards on High School End of Course Assessments

6
Which Skills are Assessed?
  • Number Sense
  • Measurement
  • Geometric Sense
  • Probability and Statistics
  • Algebraic Sense
  • Solves Problems/Reasons Logically
  • Communicates Understanding
  • Makes Connections

7
What about
  • Released WASL items
  • Good start for context, scenario, wording,
    vocabulary
  • Only content or process, not both
  • Not appropriate for a COE task
  • Summer Modules or Segmented Materials
  • Instructional, not assessment
  • Contains material below grade 10
  • Heavily scaffolded
  • Can be modified, edited before putting in a COE

9
How are the Tasks Useful?
  • Provide focus for instruction
  • Concepts, skills, procedures
  • Vocabulary
  • Situations, scenarios
  • Provide a starting point
  • To identify class work that could go into a COE
  • To develop/evaluate additional tasks
  • To develop task shells

10
Task Shell
  • Start with an existing COE task
  • Identify and describe the big ideas of the task
    (the teacher is the audience)
  • What is the purpose for doing the mathematics?
  • What are the general steps taken?
  • What are the skills used?

11
Task Shell
  • Determine and describe the purpose for an
    authentic use of mathematics
  • Career or job, area of interest, real-world task
  • Describe the steps in general terms(the teacher
    is the audience)
  • Use student friendly terms
  • Align purpose to one or more process targets
  • Refine your description using target language
  • Analyze, organize, relate,

12
Task Shell
  • Describe the mathematical content skills
  • Number Sense, Measurement, Geometric Sense
  • Align purpose to one or more content targets
  • Refine your description using target language
  • Estimate, predict, extend,

13
Task Development
  • Use the Task Shell description
  • Be specific with directions (the student is the
    audience)
  • Use vocabulary from the identified targets
  • Inverse proportion, inequality,
  • Include Be sure tos to remind students
  • Be sure to define your variables.
  • Be sure to include appropriate and consistent
    scales.
  • Share your task with other teachers
  • Revise, refine, discuss, edit,

Modifications for Future Assessments
  • Shorten Assessment
  • Require Less Writing (Constructed Response)
  • Decrease Turn Around Time
  • Explore Using Technology for Administration
  • Provide Diagnostic Information to Families and
Students(Using tools other than state assessment)
