  • Content Math
  • Grade Level 6-8
  • Creator Abby Neiburger
  • Curriculum Objectives IV.C. The learner will
use math relationships to describe and simplify
    math expressions. (G 1.6 MA-1)
  • IV.I. The learner will compute
the sum, difference, product, or quotient of
rational numbers either in expression or equation
    format. (G 1.6, 1.8, 2.2, 3.3 MA-1)
  • IV.J. The learner will evaluate
algebraic expressions given the values for the
    variables. (G 1.6, 3.2, 3.3 MA-5)

What are algebraic expressions?
  • An algebraic expression is a combination of
variables, numbers, and at least one operation.
  • In your journal, complete the following
  • Define a variable in your own words
  • Write two different expressions that are the same
    as 7a
  • If m is the number of games the Jets won, what
    does m 5 represent?

4
Try these!
  • Translate each phrase into an algebraic
    expression.
  • Three more than v
  • Seven less than h
  • The product of a number and 6
  • Twice w

5
Applications
  • The force of gravity on Earth is six times
greater than on the moon. As a result, objects
weigh six times as much on Earth as they do on
    the moon.
  • Write an expression for the weight of an object
on earth if the weight on the moon is x.
  • A scientific instrument weighs 34 pounds on the
moon. How much does the instrument weigh on
    Earth?

6
Solution
  • An algebraic expression for the weight of an
object on Earth if the weight on the moon is x
    is 6x
  • A scientific instrument weighing 34 pounds on the
    moon would weigh
  • 34 X 6 204 pounds

Glee Club
  • In preparing for their winter concert, the Glee
Club purchased 5 gallons of paint to create a
backdrop for the stage. The total bill for the
paint was 109.73, including 5.23 sales tax. The
clubs sponsor wants to know the cost of one
    gallon of paint.
  • To find the cost of one gallon of paint, solve
    the equation 5n 5.23 109.73, where n
represents the cost of one gallon of paint. Be
sure to provide the work that shows how you
    arrived at your answer.
