Title: Cultural Competency in Health Care
1Cultural Competency in Health Care
- HSAG 8th Scope of Work Goals
2Definition of cultural competency
- Cultural competence is defined simply as the
level of knowledge-based skills required to
provide effective clinical care to patients from
a particular ethnic or racial group (DHHS,
HRSA).
3Why cultural competency training?
- Growth in the number of Hispanic Americans,
African Americans and Asian Americans in the
population - Every clinical encounter is cross-cultural
- In its 2002 publication, Unequal Treatment
Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in
Healthcare, the IOM found evidence that
stereotyping, biases, and uncertainty on the part
of health care providers all contribute to
unequal treatment. - Accreditation requirements are increasingly
addressing the need for CC education (JCAHO,
NCQA, URAC) - Professional society endorsement AMA, AAFP, ACP
4Addressing cultural competency
Eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities
Improve patient compliance
Enhance patient satisfaction
Enable physicians to work effectively in
cross-cultural situations

linguistically appropriate care
