Todays Menu
  • What is the NRCS feed management standard
  • What opportunities does state adoption of this
    standard provide
  • 3) Overview of what is happening in terms of
state adoption of the Feed Management Standard.
  • 4) Good examples or case studies of where this
    has been put in practice.

3
Todays Menu
  • 5) What state would you turn to that has embraced
and put the standard into practice.
  • 6) Any examples of how standard has led to use of
EQIP cost share for encouraging adoption of feed
    management technologies or practices.
  • 7) Overview of Feed Management Project, products
or outcomes that may result, and opportunities
for NRCS to learn more about feed management
    role.

4
Six Elements Of a CNMP
Feed Management
Other Utilization Activities
Record Keeping
Manure Wastewater Storage Handling
Land Treatment Practices
Nutrient Management

6
What is the NRCS Feed Management Standard
  • Definition - Managing the quantity of available
nutrients fed to livestock and poultry for their
    intended purpose.

7
Purpose of Feed Management 592 Practice Standard
Feed to minimize excess nutrients in manure
while maintaining production, performance, and
reproduction
Feed to improve net farm income by feeding more
efficiently.
8
National Bulletin 450-6-3, Feed Management
  • State/ Area survey assessing current Feed
    Management implementation

March 2006
9
  • Purpose. To solicit information needed to define
the scope and content of the Development and
Integration of a National Feed Management
Education Program and Assessment Tool into a
    CNMP.

10
Participating StatesGreen- Has adopted 592 Red
Has not adopted 592

11
Have you initiated a process to adopt
Conservation Practice Standard (CPS) Code 592,
Feed Management?
  • 20 out of a total of 39 respondents have
    initiated 592 adoption

What year was adoption initiated?
12
If you have not begun to adopt CPS Code 592, Feed
Management, in what year might you start that
process?
13
Do you have a State-level team working to
implement CPS Code 592, Feed Management?
14
What products have you developed to implement it
in your State/Area?
  • State Practice Standards
  • LPES curriculum
  • Workshops
  • P index
  • 8 of the 20 states use one of these products

15
What are the challenges you have been or
anticipate facing in adopting CPS Code 592?
  • Not a significant resource concern for the
    state
  • Anticipate challenge of acceptance by the dairy
    industry and nutritionists
  • No money for assistance
  • Poultry Swine producers are not as open minded
since feed rations are often trade secrets

16
Feed Management knowledge
  • This practice is not being implemented within
the State partly due to a lack of
    knowledge/understanding of this practice
  • Feed management education and application tools
are needed to assist NRCS and TSPs in the
development of Feed Evaluations and Management
    Plans
  • Education program will be very useful
  • Obtaining feed management data in a format
useable for NRCS field staff, lack of
nutritionists or feed management specialists in
    NRCS

17
Implementation
  • Difficult practice to document implementation
  • need to rely heavily on Cooperative Extension
specialists and private industry to advise and
assist producers with implementation of this
    practice
  • Determining minimum quality criteria for feed
    management

18
Implementation
  • A job sheet for this practice would be helpful.
Perhaps some basic training would also be
helpful. It would also seem that a simple
self-help tool for farmers might be useful since
they will ultimately be the ones to implement any
changes to their feed management program

19
Conclusions
  • States are in need of an education program
  • States are unsure of who can/ will write feed
    management plans
  • There is a need for NTE rates and Feed
  • Management Plan Development

28
Introduction to Workshop and Resources
  • Workshop
  • Four hour format with one break
  • Follow-up training of specific tools
  • via web based training from your
  • home or office
  • Use of real farm case studies

29
Goals of Workshop
  • Goals of workshops are to provide
  • Understanding of value of Feed
  • Management as part of Whole
  • Farm Nutrient Management
  • Opportunity to become certified as Feed
  • Management Planner (NRCS ARPAS)
  • Tools to complete the development of a
  • Feed Management Plan

30
Resources
  • Resources
  • Team of National Experts in
  • in Feed Management and Whole Farm
  • Nutrient Management
  • Systematic development and implementation
  • scheme
  • Fact Sheets as supplemental information
  • On-farm assessment tools to gather
  • information for FMP

31
Additional Resources
  • Resources
  • Spreadsheet based tools
  • Example Feed Management Plan

Feed to minimize excess nutrients in manure while

reproduction
35
Feed to improve net farm income by feeding more
efficiently.
36
  • Conditions where practice applies
  • ) Whole farm imbalance
  • ) Soil nutrient build-up
  • ) Land base not large enough
  • ) Seeking to enhance nutrient efficiencies
  • If one or more apply, continue on to next step

37
Determine the FM opportunities for addressing
resource concerns Use Opportunity Checklist
(NRCS, TSP may want to collaborate with
nutritionists)
38
Assessing the Opportunities
Step 2 B
Photos NRCS
39
Step 2B Assess the Opportunities
  • Use the opportunity checklist to determine the
relative opportunity for feed management to
impact Whole Farm Nutrient Management or increase
net farm income by feeding more efficiently.

40
Opportunity Checklists
  • 4 different checklists
  • Dairy
  • Beef
  • Swine
  • Poultry
  • Fed and managed differently

41
Checklist Purpose
  • The first step in making a decision on whether or
    not to complete a FMP
  • Determines the relative opportunity for feed
management to impact Whole Farm Nutrient
    Management
  • Initial, quick, on-farm assessment tool

42
Determines if FMP should be completed
  • Management practices which have the greatest
opportunity for feed management to impact Whole
    Farm Nutrient Management
  • If one or more of the Opportunity Checklist items
are noted in the category of "moderate or lots of
opportunity for improvement, then the next
    evaluation step should be completed

Opportunities exist for FM to address resource
concern
48
Little opportunity for FM to address resource
concern, no FMP developed
49
  • Consider other opportunities of the CNMP
  • 1) Manure and waste water handling and storage
  • ) Nutrient management
  • ) Land treatment

50
  • Evaluate options based upon
  • Economics of feed change (Nutritionist )
  • Economics and time requirements for manure
    transport
  • (NRCS, TSP and Nutritionist)
  • Land access requirements including costs (rent
    lease or purchase) (Producer)
