3- Victoria is the capital of British Columbia. It
became the capital of B.C in 1868, and it was the
capital of Vancouver Island from 1849 to 1866
when Vancouver Island became part of B.Cs group.
4- Victoria is located along a harbor in the
southeastern part of Vancouver Island. In
Victoria, approximately 2 million tourists visit
each year. Some of the attractions include the
scenic surroundings and the nice climate. The
narrow streets and the neat gardens represent the
ones in England. Visitors or tourists, can buy
imported goods (British) and antiques in this
city. It is classified as one of the nicest
visiting cities. A survey reported that Victoria
is said to be one of the worlds best cities.
5- A third of the workers of the metropolitan of
Victoria have jobs related to the tourist
industry. A few of the important industries are
boat building, fishing, forestry, research and
technology. The growing industries in the city
are research and technology. Victoria is also
home to a major fishing fleet, shipbuilding, and
repair, as well as forest products along with
machine manufacturing industries of which, are
significant sources of employment. During the
World Wars, the Victoria Harbor and the Esquimalt
Harbors were key Canadian shipbuilding
centers. In the 1960s to the 1970s Victoria
completed projects which made it more beautiful,
and preserved its older areas as well. The
project also included the renewal of the
Historic Downtown Residential District,
construction of new docks and walkways for the
harbor.
6- For most of the nineteenth century, Victoria
remained the largest city in B.C In the twentieth
century, it evolved primarily as a city of
government, retirement, and tourism.
7- The natives that inhabited the area were the
Songhee and the Kosapsom peoples. James Douglas
decided to set up Fort Victoria fur trade post.
Victoria was incorporated as a city on August
2nd, 1862. The capital before Victoria was New
Westminister. Then British Columbia was formed
and they chose Victoria as the capital city.
