1
Cell Phone Technology
  • Wesley Randolph, Emory Mandala, Oisin Dolley,
    Derek Slabosz, David Zeiher

2
Investigate Cell Phone Operating Systems and
Compatibility Issues
  • Windows Mobile- Is only compatible with Microsoft
Outlook, this program gives you the ability to
edit Microsoft Office document, where as other OS
    have read-only features.
  • Blackberry OS- Similar to the Windows Mobile
however the system only is compatible with
Blackberry. The system is similar to a hand held
PDA, allowing file sharing and updating charts
and files. (calenders, phone books, and e-mail)
Limits you to viewing only programs in support of
the Microsoft Offices big three. (Word,
    PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • OS X iPhone- Touch screen Mac OSX, downloading
apps from the iStore, both Mac and Windows
operating system capable. Able to download and
view the document, if you e-mail to your phone
then it is only a read only file.

3
Investigate all of the features and communication
tools available on smart phones
  • Features
  • They have all the functioning of a normal cell
    phone.
  • Wireless, e-mail, Internet, web browsing, and fax
  • Intercom function
  • Personal information management
  • Online banking
  • LAN connectivity
  • Graffiti style data entry
  • Local data transfer between phone set and
    computer
  • Remote data transfer between phone set and
    computer
  • Remote control of computers
  • Remote control of home or business electronic
    systems
  • Interactivity with unified messaging
  • Communication tools
  • Voice calling systems
  • Text messaging
  • Image file sharing
  • E-Mail

4
Explain How Cell Phone Towers Work And How
Internet Traffic Is Carried Through Them
5
Investigate Cell Phone Security Concerns And
Solutions For Them
  • Security Issues
  • Release of information to a third party
  • Big Brother watching you
  • Viruses
  • Capturing pictures and them being placed on the
    Internet
  • Identity theft
  • Solutions
  • Encryption
  • Password
  • Biometrics

Research And Explain Virus, Spam, And Spyware
Protection Software For Cell Phones
  • Kaspersky's Anti-Virus for Symbian OS, which is
in open beta testing, enables people to set their
phone to receive regular antivirus updates.
Alternatively, they can download the updates
manually from the WAP section of Kaspersky's Web
site. The cell phone security software includes a
monitor to intercept viruses as they arrive and a
scanner that looks for malicious code on request,
according to Kaspersky. However it only protects
6.1 and 7.0, and does not include the newest 9.0
    version.
  • Also antivirus software is being implemented for
example the F-Secure. The Symbian OS smart phones
will provide on-device protection, similar in
fashion to antivirus protection programs for PCs,
with automatic over-the-air antivirus updates for
    a monthly fee.

Explain What Bluetooth Is, How It Works, And What
Its Security Issues Are
  • Bluetooth wireless technology is a short-range
communications system intended to replace the
    cables connecting portable and/or fixed
    electronic devices.
  • The Bluetooth RF (physical layer) employs a
frequency hop transceiver to combat interference
and fading. One device provides the
synchronization reference and is known as the
master. All other devices are known as slaves. A
group of devices synchronized in this fashion
form a piconet. This is the fundamental form of
    communication for Bluetooth wireless technology.
  • The security issues are since it is only a radio
signal others may have the ability to access
conversations and hacking into your information.

Vocabulary
  • Smartphone- a mobile phone offering advanced
capabilities beyond a typical mobile phone, often
    with PC-like functionality.
  • Cell Phone- a long-range, electronic device used
for mobile voice or data communication over a
network of specialized base stations known as
    cell sites.
  • Antenna- A combination of wires, metal rods, etc.
used in sending and receiving electromagnetic
    waves.
  • Bluetooth- a wireless protocol for exchanging
data over short distances from fixed and mobile
devices, creating personal area networks (PANs).
  • Radio Channels- Group of receivers that take in
the radio waves and are specific destinations for
    signals.
