Why Sectoral Approach is important

• Even if the maximum brunt is borne by the health
  sector many preventive strategies are outside its
  domain
• Sectoral approach tends to minimize duplication
  and overlap and yet lead to judicious use of
  scarce resources
• It creates ownership by clearly defining roles
  and responsibilities

Intra-sectoral coordination is also important

• For example between the different levels of
  health sector
• For example between the different levels of
  transport sector
• For example the different levels of traffic
  police sector

Coordinating mechanisms between different sectors

• Identifying a lead agency with full legal and
  administrative authority
• Formal and informal two way reporting between the
  different sectors and the lead agency
• Quarterly or yearly meetings of program managers
  level
• At least yearly meetings of the sectoral heads
• Publishing yearly reports

However..care should be taken

• That roles and responsibilities are clearly
  measured and observed
• Ensure to avoid fragmentation of the program
  between different sectors
• Ensure to avoid the tendency of ownership being
  diluted
• All sectors abide by agreed set of protocols
