AIMS
  • Investigate the current use of 'Web 2.0'
    technologies in UK HE information services.
  • Evaluate the potential they offer future service
    development.
  • Establish H.E expectations regarding usefulness
    of such software.

CONTEXT
  • Emergence of new technologies, social software,
    online communities, and 'Web 2.0'.
  • The uptake of wikis, blogs, and RSS by
    information services.
  • New demands on information services.

OBJECTIVES
  • Identify and evaluate in detail suitable Web 2.0
    technologies for use by information services.
  • Assess present usage of these software tools in
    UK HE information services, and identify areas
    which might benefit from their introduction.
  • Investigate the use of these tools in US HE
    information services as a possible model of good
    / bad practice.
  • Recommend guidelines and standards for
    implementation.

  • Online survey of American Universities known to
    use Web 2.0 technology.

  • Research report and pamphlet one detailed, one
    easily grasped.
  • Conference Promoting Library2.0 for UK HE.

SCHEDULE
  • 1. Review wikis- 3-4 weeks
  • 2. Produce questionnaire and complete within 4
    weeks.
  • 3. Compile results within 2 weeks
  • 4. US wiki collaboration and online research-
    initially 2 months, then ongoing at regular
    intervals to monitor and update.
  • 5. Present findings to relevant
    bodies/organisations inc. IT sections of HE
    institutions, also conference with
    lecturers/admin - up to 3 meetings over 3 months.
