Title: Wow!

1
Wow!
  • You are a member of a stellar group
  • World-class talent
  • Lots of great ideas
  • Hard and important problems
  • Stimulating hallway discussions
  • Despite current funding climate, Im confident in
    our future
  • That said

2
Raising the Bar
  • What did I hear Randy say?
  • We cant claim to be working on revolutionary
    architectures
  • We are focused on incremental enhancements to
    the Internet architecture
  • This is not the Randy I know -)
  • Whitehouse advisor, DARPA PM, visionary,
department chair, corporate director, creator of
    multi-billion dollar industries, future chancellor

3
Raising the Bar
  • My feedback some simple themes
  • Reject the IP service model
  • Wonderfully elegant yet it doesnt work (really)
  • Change the rules of the game
  • Microsoft is wrong, Cisco is wrong, Oracle is
    wrong (okay, Apple is right)
  • Its okay to think you may change the world in a
    big way
  • Leave incrementalism to industry

4
The Problem
  • The Internet service model is wrong
  • No mechanism to enforce boundaries
  • No mechanism for load-balancing and failover
  • No mechanism for iBoxes
  • Industrys response
  • Lots of network-level hacks to solve important
problems (NAT, load balancers, caches, firewall,
    etc)

5
The Opportunity
  • Redefine the architecture
  • Change the rules of the game so the hacks become
elegant extensions of a superior architecture
  • My gut instinct cant do this at the network
layer (I.e., with iBoxes that process individual
    packets)
  • Need to move up the stack

6
A Strawman Vision
  • Do everything on the table as a transport level
    abstraction
  • End hosts talks to infrastructure (over TCP)
  • End hosts talk to each other over L4.5
  • Two-level addressing (like I3)
  • Next hop (I.e., iBox)
  • End hosts
  • Hop-by-hop transport embedded in network
  • Routers forward packets between end hosts
    iBoxes
  • iBoxes forward app payloads between end hosts

7
The Challenge
  • This is really hard
  • Change the end host OS
  • (but maybe not the app)
  • Change TCP
  • Add a layer between TCP the app
  • Convince the world
  • Just a strawman
  • Point is to think audaciously

8
Thanks
  • Think big and revolutionary
  • You can change the world
  • Thanks
