The Pilgrims came on a ship named the Mayflower.

• The pilgrims built houses during the spring and
  summer to prepare for the cold winter.

• The Pilgrims were not alone on this land.
  Indians also lived there.

The Pilgrims became friends with an Indian named
Squanto who taught them how to grow corn. He
helped them by planting fish with the corn.

• The Pilgrims wanted to celebrate their harvest,
  so they invited the Indians to come to their
  celebration. This celebration was in October of
  1621. It was called the first Thanksgiving.

In 1863, President Lincoln made Thanksgiving an
official holiday. We celebrate Thanksgiving on
the fourth Thursday in November.
