Rhode Island
  • A fire occurred on the night of 20/02/2003 in a
night club in Rhode Island with 440 people
inside. A band was performing on stage, between
the dance floor and the raised platform. The band
used pyrotechnics that ignited walls and ceiling,
bans stop playing 30 seconds after the fire
started, then evacuation begun. Fire and smoke
spread quickly in the room, and the night club
was not equipped with sprinkler. Most of people
(two third) tried to escape via the main
entrance. A crowd rush occurred in front of the
main entrance, mainly due to the arrangement of
    the entrance.

5
Reports of NIST (National Institute of Standards
and Technology).
  • history of the building
  • the timeline of the incident
  • the emergency incident response
  • materials testing
  • computer simulation of fire and smoke spread
  • analysis of building egress, standards, and the
    findings and recommendations

6
Key points
  • Building
  • No sprinkler
  • Ceiling ? acoustical wall ? wood
  • 440 people instead of 420
  • Evacuation delayed (part of the show)
  • 2/3 people escape via the main entrance
  • Corridor in main entrance
  • Simulation shows that 90s after ignition the
    environment was untenable (gt400C)
